Long angle parts in wing kit

Post by johnk »

Fellow builders,

Now that I'm reaching the end of my hyper-slow-build 9A wings, I came across four long angle pieces on the top of my parts shelves. I recall that two 15 foot angles included with the wing kit are for the fuselage, and I set them aside long ago, but I don't remember any mention of these other four. They are 3/4" x 3/4" in cross section, two are 9'10" long, and the other two are 12' long. Does anyone know if these are also for the fuselage? I don't see them in the wing plans.

Thanks
John

I am well into my fuse John and still have those angles myself. I was actually looking at them wondering what they will be used for. I have looked through the fuse plans and so far I can't find reference to them. I've done all of the fabrication required to roll the canoe over too.

I was wondering if we were really efficient in our usage of kit materials.

I'm just about to start doing the big bends on the fuselage longerons. I pulled down the long pieces and discovered the other angle pieces stashed up there with them. Looks like they are just extras. On the fuselage, I've already gone through most of the angle stock making various parts for the bulkheads. It's nice to know there is more in the kit to use.

On finishing kit (made first canopy cuts this weekend, booyah!) and have at least two 10 footers. Just extra.

Have you done your seat backs yet??? Those things eat a bunch of angle.

In the end I did not have much angle left over. I made a few mistakes here and there that ate up some of it but not sure there was a whole lot of extra....

Ahh, the seat backs explain some of it. I never made them as I intend to use the Classic Aero Aviator seats that have the integral frame. When you see that much left over angle, you scratch your head for a minute and hope you didn't forget something. Kind of like the bazillion left over rivets from a kit.

Thanks to all, I'll just let them collect more dust.

No, I haven't made the seat backs yet, but I hope when I get that far, that the instructions give me a hint about which long pieces it's ok to cut up into smaller pieces; I'd hate to find out afterwards that I have to pay to ship a new long piece to my house from the west coast.

I do remember, however, reading not to cut up the 15 footers.

Yep, those become your longerons. You'll end up trimming them just a hair as it is, but only about an inch if memory serves.
