RV9A WV

Post by gsxphil »

Making steady progress on the build. Wings are ordered and scheduled to crate on the 18th of April. Attached is a link to Photobucket. Hope it works. All I have left to do is attaching the fiberglass tips and mount the Trim Servo in left elevator, I think that's it. Ready to take a break from building for a couple of weeks. Looking forward to Sun N Fun. Hope to meet some RVer's in Florida. Thanks, Phil

I got my wings on Friday and unfortunately 6 of my wing skins were damaged. The shipping company had knocked the 2x4's that were on the bottom of the crate off sometime in shipping. Then they proceeded to put one of the forks of a fork truck through the side of the box.
Thankfully Van's has already made me new ones and they are on their way. Thank you Van's.

I've started on the spars. Going good so far. I did have an issue initially with the tank nutplates, the CS for the #8 dimple were not turning out well. Not nice and round like they should be. I called my friend Dave (RV7 builder) and he came by to help. Turns out I was going too slow with the drill. I read so much about CS at slow speed, I got too slow. Lots of chatter and not nice and round. He got me on track.

Making slow steady progress. Left Leading edge and Left tank complete. Up next, skins. I have inboard skin dimpled and ready to go, still have to dimple the outboard skin. Hopefully tonight. Possibly riveting skins on Fri and Saturday.

Top skins riveted on. Paul and Dave came over and in 2 1/2 hours we were done. I was totally surprised that we did them that quick.

Looks great, Phil! You sure are motorin' through the wing kit! Do you have the fuselage kit on order yet?

Completed ailerons. On to flaps next. I sure hope they are easier than the ailerons.

After 3.5 months I have completed the ailerons and flaps for my 9A. I did wind up with oil canning on one of my ailerons, its just in one section between the ribs. Not sure what to do about this??? Now its time to start on the right wing. Left wing is complete with the exception of riveting bottom skins on. Hopefully by end of Jan. I can have right wing complete. Fuselage is ordered with a ship date of Jan. 3rd. Continuing to bang rivets.

Not much you can do after riveting to fix the oil-canning. The flanges on the ribs have to be perfectly at 90 degrees, and trying to bend them after the fact is hopeless. Build on! The fuselage will be a fun time, but it will fill up your shop space pretty quickly.

Wings are pretty much complete with the exception of bottom skins and a few minor tasks. SB fuselage is suppose to be here on Friday. Looking forward to something different. [Image/img]
