Hi Spike, hmm, at least the C172 I did my licence in had an O-320 installed, not an O-360! If we´re talking derating an engine, I haven´t heard of any O-360 engines being derated to 160hp or less, but I´ve seen a couple of (I)O-540 being derated to 250/235hp purely by limiting rpm´s. Just my 2 cents...
I totally agree that (major) modifications must be done to the airframe, but the nature of my question was even more generic... Also the regs need to be checked out thoroughly, however I have seen an N-registered Experimental (a Pitts S1S) with a tow-hook fitted here in Germany if I´m not completely...
