Canada
I flew to Kenora some years back in my Bonanza. It was a great experience and I would do it again in a second. I need to get my -8 done :bang: I think things have changed some since I was there. I believe a passport is required as is a radio station license. Kenora was a mandatory reporting station ...

Substructure dies
While I know some will swear by them but I see the substructure dies as a solution without a problem. Two dimples of the same size will be well nested during the riveting process and provide an interference fit. I see that as a good thing. Additionally, the deeper dimples will enlarge the holes in t...

That isn't Van, it is his cousin Mario Vangrunsven. They snapped that pic while he was in warp speed mode.

Fiber lock nuts
I have never been comfortable with fiber lock nuts on connections like the elevator pushrod to control horn. I have been told by very experienced people on the other forum that this style nut is completely adequate and more or less, I'm in left field. That said, the current tail group inspections ha...

Why? Why? Why?
I have been around airplanes all my life, attending OSH beginning as a kid and even attending Rockford once. Building was always in the back of my mind, but I didn't think I had the time to complete an airplane. After owning several airplanes and being directly involved in my maintenance for 20 plus...

BOS
I have purchased all 4 kits but had not given the BOS any thought. What would be the advantages/disadvantages of getting the BOS now vs. later?

Firewall question
I see you have not riveted the firewall to the side and bottom skins. Did you dimple those holes before assembly? I am a little unclear as to when we dimple those holes as we will need to fit the hinge or whatever we use on the inside of the firewall at some later date. Just curious what your game p...

Countersink depth
I checked the depth tonight. .005 to .007 seems about right for my setup.

How many clicks
I just finished countersinking the lower and mid longerons. I will start the upper longerons tomorrow night. I will try to count the clicks tomorrow night. It is more than a few. I have noticed that a small gap will close when riveted. I think a small bit of interference is desirable. Sounds like yo...

Looks good
Looks good Bruce. Congrats on the progress. Just a note on your rigging (yellow strap). A good rule of thumb is to maintain a 2 to 1 height to width relationship on your rigging straps. In other words, create an equilateral triangle with the rigging. Also watch those sharp edges like the hole in the...

So are you saying that if I take in 2,500 hours of video tape showing me building the plane, they aren't going to watch it?

Wings
I would disassemble the cleco'd wing. I probably would not put the skins on the riveted wing. If you bend or ding a rib on the assembled wing it would be an easy and cheap repair. If you burger a skin it is going to cost a bit more. If you cleco the skin and snag a cleco you will likely get some sma...

Where from?
Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. Bruce....Where did you get that? Even though I'm about done scuffing parts, I think I want one. It just seems like a guy ought to own the tool that could have saved him about 30 man hours. Let me guess, it's $1.39 :) What other tools are you keeping secret that might s...

Fun fuse
I'm building the fuse (-8 ) now. It is more fun than the wings but gets frustrating as everything gets tight in a hurry. Sometimes it feels more like a wrestling match than an airplane build.

So...for those of you that did install the stall warner, how did you dimple the holes for the bracket that gets mounted in the leading edge skin?? The manual gives the option to countersink and use pop rivets, but I really dont want to do that! I was able to open the skin enough to dimple it with t...

Prepunched?
My wing skins were pre-punched for the vane so I went ahead and installed it. I am going to put it on a separate breaker so I can pull the breaker if doing acro, mis-adjustment on test flight, etc. If the skins had not been punched for the vane, I would have left it off.

Not two person
I built my fixture out of 2x4's (and I'm in the steel business). I did hand pick the wood for straightness and glued and screwed a couple of 2x4's together for each post. Easy peasy. Buy some cheap clips in the hardware section and bang the thing together and you will still have 2.8 days of vacation...

Fixture before skins
The only way you can be sure the wing is built without twist is to fix the locations of the main and rear spar.
I would build the fixture first.
