CJ... thanks. I did what Mike recommended for the original rivet, and after sleeping on it, I'm also going to put two additional rivets in like you and Van's recommended. The original rivet will get a JB Weld treatment to clean it up and keep it secure. When all is done I plan to cover the two addit...

So the response from Van's recommended the fairly textbook approach. Drill it out, and put a new rivet on either side. Put a rivet in this hole if I like, for looks and use JB Weld to secure it. The last sentence told me more than that. "Replace the skin if you don't want your buddies to see what yo...

Mike, I highly doubt I will replace the skin... In the end as long as I repair it well it shouldn't be more than cosmetic. I like your idea... Less work than increasing the rivet size. What's really bad, is I made this same mistake during the practice kit only with the pneumatic squeezer... Guess I ...

Bad Dimple on Horiz Stab Skin
Seems like I'm making a lot of mistakes. :( Well, here's my latest one: Doing my first dimpling on the HS 801 Skin and while I thought I had the skin on the dimple... it slipped. :o The "new" dimple is right next to the hole. This hole is in the center on the rear edge for attaching to the rear spar...

Vortex Generators on an RV-4
This topic came up in discussion at the last EAA Chapter meeting. Dave Hirschman from AOPA Pilot magazine puts a set on his RV-4 and tests the characteristics. Interesting results...

Thanks Mike. I ordered replacement parts, despite some good solutions. I'm ok with one error, but I don't like having multiple errors in the same area... If for no other reason than how I'll feel about it. I'd definitely do the shim... But the holes are off too. Anyways, thanks for the help. I'll po...

Mike & CJ... thanks for the input. Van's technical support echoed the ideas you presented here. Right now I'm thinking I will shim the first part, and most likely order a new HS-405 because I have not drilled the 404 or the spar on that side. One replacement part, and I can install as intended. The ...

RV-8 HS-404 & HS-405 Drilling Mistakes
Hi all, So I have two problems. 1. The previous owner of the empennage kit marked on the empennage that the right HS-404 rib needed to be replaced. I wanted to assemble it to see exactly where the problem was and determine if it is fixable. I think I COULD fix it, but its probably better if I simply...

Uh oh! He is working under the tootilidge of Mike B! This could be trouble! Ha! Mike's been great. Gave me my first RV flight. :) Per request, here is a pic of the project. (I haven't done much yet, but the previous owner got a start on the Horiz stab.) http://plbarrett2004.files.wordpress.co...

Introduction
Hi all. Newbie to Rivetbangers here, introducing myself. Peter Barrett, from Littlestown PA. I recently purchased a second hand RV-8 empennage and have begun work. Day one and I already discovered a mistake that requires a new part order! Anyways, I've been reading the various forums and sites for a...
