this is not what it appears to be.

Yes, I have a friend with one of these and he has mega hours of experience. In my opinion, only someone with a LOT of experience should use this instrument. Here is a "for instance" where you could be easily misled. Lets say you were IMC and practicing slow flight. With this instrument you could be ...

A sad ending to the Saga

I am very sad to report that the owner of this STOL Cessna 182 perished flying into his short little strip about two months ago. He was 65 and had but 50 hours when he purchased the aircraft. I flew with him for six months while he got some experience and then I moved to Kamloops, B.C. Before I left...

I just primed the whole 9 yards on the aileron brackets. After all, you are going to paint them right? So, you might as well prime them properly too. I used Super Koropon and let it cure for a few days to eliminate shrinkage after riveting. Be sure to countersink on the correct side of the brackets,...

Ya, the web's only function is to hold the top and bottom caps from moving in relation to each other. So, if you think these scratches will stop the web from accomplishing it's intended purpose, then replace it. On my quickbuild wings I have a scratch in the actual spar cap, courtesy of the Philipin...

The New AFS EFIS

I was chatting with Stein of Steinair the other day and we got talking about EFIS's. I have been leaning towards the GRT which is pretty much bullet proof, but I noticed the new AFS EFIS units which surfaced at Sun'nFun. Stein told me he has been beta testing these units and they have been very good...

Mike,

You can do this operation without removing the flap brace for sure, and I have read that it can also be done with the aileron gap seal in place.

Heads Up on Vans Quickbuild Wings.

Guys and Gals, Here is a heads up on the QB Wing Kits. The first thing you should do when your kit arrives at Vans, is to arrange to go and look at it BEFORE it is crated for shipping. Some things to check for are: 1. Check the fuel tank to spar fit and conformity to the airfoil. One of mine had a h...

I've reserved C-FRVP for our "8". I wanted "m" for the last letter, but that one was taken. It would have been perfect since both of our last names start with "M", Marshall and Mcleod.

Spike, I was refering to a separate instrument TAS Indicator, or the EFIS type TAS indication, both of which are driven by the same information. The "spin it yourself" bezel type gizmos are kind of Mickey Mouse in my opinion, although better than nothing. This is basically the TAS function of an E-6...

Spike, TAS indicators do factor in the OAT, otherwise they could not produce TAS. For a TAS indicator to work it takes pressure altitude, TOAT, and IAS/CAS into consideration. The thing is, with a proper, moving "Barber Pole" VNE indicator on the airspeed indicator,(not a painted, fixed redline), th...

Chad, Yes a respirator is probably better. Most people just use a paper filter mask over the nose and mouth for sanding. I used the bandsaw for most of my trimming, then used a bench sander and finally sanding blocks. I did not use a mask for any of it. (Which is not very good) It is difficult to bl...

John,

I don't think Dynon have anything different than the other good companies, that is, they use mems instead of the spinning top type gyros. All the new stuff uses these. My only beef with Dynon is the pitch display, or lack of it.

Cheers,
Pete.

Spike, Have a look at all of the other EFIS displays. Guess what? They all have pitch markings for every ten degrees. Except Dynon. Not only that, Dynon does not appear to have pitch attitude bars beyond 30 degrees pitch up, or down. How strange is that. What are these guys smoking?? I wonder if the...
