Super...thanks a bunch. Now it makes total sense. I've now read the instructions about 20 times and I'm frankly not sure what Van's is trying to communicate, but I think the way you did it makes perfect sense.

Thanks so much!

Sorry about the lack of clarity. I'm talking about drilling the HS 404 and 405 ribs to the front and rear spar assemblies (and indirectly to eachother) per bullet point 2 under "Drilling the Horizontal Stabilizer" in the instructions. These particular flanges are not predrilled. Many thanks, grant-

HS frame question

So I've got the front and rear spars put together, and now it's time to drill in all the ribs in the correct locations. I'm curious if I should drill them in the locations per the plans, or should I pull out the skins and place them on the spars to see -exactly-where the ribs should so so that the s...

The RV-9 has the docile handling of a Cessna with the great flying qualities of an RV. Unless you're a high time pilot or really want to do aerobatics, I would get the -9. If you main goal is long cross country then I would definitely recommend a -9. An RV-7 is a Porsche and an RV-9 is more like an ...

Well, I was referring to the thick angle in the HS spars that need to be tapered. Would a cut off wheel on a die grinder work for that? I don't have to be that precise because I finish everything off with the skotchbright wheel. Maybe I'll just give in and get a band saw. And suggestions for a deskt...

Captian...why did you square off the ends of your HP 609PP's? (Or at least it looks that way in the pictures. Don't the plans call for rounding them off?

Just curious...

How to remove black writing and glue from Vans stickers...

Hi All, Started my HS today, and I had a little trouble removing both the sticky residue left from Van's part number stickers and the black writing on the long HS spar strengtheners (HS608 I think). The self etching primer I'm using just requres a cleaning with a light detergent, but that method doe...

Frank Justice Instructions....

Maybe everybody knows about these, but I COULD NOT have built my -6 without these great instructions.

Van's instructions are better now and the kits are somewhat different, but I still think there is lots of useful stuff.

HS and VS construction order

So I finally got the time to study the instructions and plans the last few days and I see that the order of construciton is totally different than when I built my -6. In those days, you completely built the spar and rib structure which was supported by a simple jig, and then you worked on getting th...

I'm not sure this helps much, but I notices last night that there is info about the AEX process in section 5 of the builder's manual. Of course upon seeing this I tore through the plans (RV-8) to see where I had to use this technique and of course found nothing. NOW I understand what the AEX info wa...

So last night I read the instructions and I see that the order of construction is totally different than before all the pre-punched skins. I think this new non-jig construction method is the reason for a few more pop-rivets. I'm going to post a questions about this in the RV-8 area.

Lots of pop rivets in kit???

Hey guys, I just unpacked all the little brown bags for my RV-8 kit and I noticed that there seem to be a lot more pop rivets than were in my -6 kit of 12 years ago. Does Van's now give users the option of using a lot of pop rivets to save time, or are there a lot of pop rivets left over when the em...

The fuel in the wing tips with the tube running through tubes seems really complicated (read: preblematic and error prone) for the occasional time you want extended range. I would prefer a 5 - 20 gallon tank that goes in the rear seat (of an 8) and connects into the fuel valve that you can install w...

If you can afford it, get a QB. I built a -6 the old fashioned way and wouldn't do it again. This is going to sounds nuts, but frankly building the plane's structure is pretty simple but very time consuming. I'm building an 8a QB this time so I can focus all my effort on the detail work that make th...

I was just going to post inquiring about this...this is GREAT! So does the -6 fly like a real -6? I only have FS 2002 so it looks like I'm stuck flying the -6. I'm actually building the -8, but I don't care about the view out the window; only the handling and power characteristics. Will I have to do...
