CJ, I always have the male die on the bottom. When you pull the upper surface back to slide the lower into the C-frame, the lower skins arches up ... away from the die. I tried best I could to flatten it back down, but was getting nasty marks in the process. (just like gradeschool... ) Did yo...

Dimpling the Elevator Skin

Did anybody elese have trouble getting nice clean dimples in the elev skin when using a C-frame? Because of the rounded pre-formed leading edge, when I did the dimples near there, the skin tended to arch up away from the dimple die ... I got decent dimples, but there were noticeable pucker marks alo...

Elevator

I tried to squeeze those, but w/o a longeron yoke it was no dice. I shot 'em ...and really had no problem getting a bucking bar in there. I was concerned at first, but with 90psi on the rivet gun, those babies crush in no time. Spike, you and I are at nearly exactly the same place in the c...

The OSH Rivetbanger Clubhouse

At least three of of us will be in OSH for Wed thru Sat morning . There may be three more ... they haven't for sure committed yet. Right now I have two rooms reserved in a Best Western about 40mi from OSH. The cost per room with tax is about $120 to $130 per night , split between two guys. Looks lik...

Bucking Bars

Interesting thing about those bucking bars ... didja notice how much they vary in price fromone supplier to another? I cross checked all the the suppliers and ordered my bars from absolutely the lowest price outfit. I never paid more the $15 and usually closer to $10. I'm happy with all of 'em , and...

Negative on the "big die" idea. If it were hitting the work before the rivet, it would really be scarring up my aluminum. No sign of such. I've also tried 3 different AN470 rivet sets ... same result with all three. FYI ... when I can squeeze the 1/8" rivets, they're going fine. Question: Do you guy...

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm using a good size bucking bar ... certainly not a small one, though I don't know the exact lbs. I may have to put a pressure gauge on the gun itself. I'm using the Vans-recommended swivel-regulator at the gun. My gauge off the compressor reads 85psi, as does the gauge...

1/8" 470 Rivets - Tough to set!

I'm having a devil of a time setting the 1/8" 470 rivets. They do NOT want to form a shop head when I try to buck 'em . I'm using an ATS 3X rivet gun with 80psi off the compressor, reduced at the gun. On some of the longer rivets (6's and 8's) I have to shoot for multiple minutes to get any "crush" ...

9A - VS lower hinge support

You're right, Spike. I had to read that section about 6 times ...and refer to drawing 27A more than once... before I was sure. Drawing 27A (re: rear end of fuse) says the 9 A bottom hinge support gets rivets on the same spacing as the top hinge support. It's there, but a little camoflaged in all the...

Stickin' my big nose in .... just east of Nashville, near Murphysboro, is Stones River National Battlefield. One of the better civil war parks. I have bucked 100% of my rivets so far ... no trouble except for the l-o-n-g 1/8" rivets in the spars. It appears I'm gonna have to beg my spousal unit for help on some of those. I do not use a swivel set with collar .. I tried those at the Sportair workshop ... most guys (including moi)didn't like ...

I'm thinking the same way, Chad. That latest crank bulletin from Lyco is r-e-a-l-l-y disgusting. Large sums of green for a potentially "buggy" engine, whereupon fixing the mfgr's screwups requires more large sums of green. :bang: Some of the guys I've talked to at OSH with Egg-Subies said they had i...

I talked to Ken at the Vans builders' help line about this several weeks ago. Though I'm desperately afraid CJ will get a big head about this  , Ken said, " Peel the blue stuff off.
