Ugh. This is going to be another one of those deals where I spent a bunch of money to get a one-time-use tool, is it? Gah.

Bob, If I were you, I'd mount the COM antenna forward of the F-704 bulkhead, underneath of the gear weldment. There's a couple of benefits to that. Less wire = less weight. Don't need to go through the F-704. I saw someone use that mount to access the antenna in flight to route a handheld to it in ...

For those with glasses... what impact does this have in getting a medical renewed ? Is there any restrictions or denials of the medical if you end up having to swap glasses while doing the eye portion of the test ? I can't imagine spending the money for two pair of glasses to swap out when a pair o...

Antenna runs

I'm one of the few people -- I think -- who has installed manual trim in his RV-7A. There are good sides and bad sides to the situation but on the latter, the lack of wiring runs is one of them. There are two holes that take wires down the tunnel. And the manual trim cable takes up valuable real est...

My vision has been going for several years (age 55)but THIS year has been the time when it's really gotten to be a pain in the neck. This has been especially true when I'm trying to get, say, a small screw or bolt into a hole to hold an Adel clamp or something.

You know, around midmorning I remembered I worked for the largest public radio station network in the country, with a big engineering department...rows and rows of cabinets with connectors and wire and all sorts of cool stuff. So i brought the harness in and we found just the right sized tool to do ...

What the heck is the secret to getting these pins OUT? I've tried inserting a wire to push the prong down but no luck (wanted to put some snakeskin I just bought on all the wires.

Shielding brings up another question, then. I see a lot of disagreement on the question of shielding on headset/mic wires. The ICOM A210 schematic, for ex, does not show shielding terminating at the radio, but does show it terminating at the audio panel or (in my case) the PS1000II. This would be fo...

Was just browsing some old posts on the blog and was reminded that this video (or a link to it) got removed from VAF, too. It apparently upset the formation flying crowd.. again, not RV specific, but we've certainly seen bigger tangents.

Was a funny video, tho.

Routing wires for headsets/mics

AeroElectric Connection cautions against running headphone/mic wires with wires carrying current. I'd kinda like to bunch the wires together for a beter appearance. I've already got too many different routes for wires to follow. In the advice above, does this include, say, the power cable for the Ic...

Joe: As you know, I've made a number of attempts to try to get moderator's to adopt a fairly uniform set of principles. I even suggested a closed area of VAF to discuss these sorts of things. It never happened. I don't have a problem with moderation. I make my living online and I know how stupidly t...

Yeah, to get birth announcement to stick over there it has to have the subject line "Here's another story about the space shuttle"

At the heart of the question is really an old, old debate. What is the point of building. I learned before I started that the primary reason to build an RV is because you want to BUILD an RV. And after 2,100 hours of construction, I'd have to agree. The building process has been amazingly fun and in...

800 for 60-80k. Better than what I'm getting from NationAir (AIG). I think it about $400 for 20-30, then $700 for 40-60.
