Joining fuselage sections with some proseal?
Rear section of the 9 fuselage is done, and the center section is getting riveted together today. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to run a small bead of proseal where these sections overlap before I join them together permanently. Is there any disadvantage to doing this? I can see it would ...

back at it also
After a month off for end of school stuff, then a 16 day vacation in our RV (Winnebago), I spent a whole night in the garage just staring at parts trying to remember where I left off. Last 2 nights were spent getting the crotch strap brackets drilled and the center section deburred. Time to prime th...

I did the delrin stops in addition to the one's in the plans. I followed Smitty's instructions on the delrin ones. I bought a 7/8" dia. delrin rod from ACS, but they ended up shipping me 2 foot long pieces, so I have plenty extra. If anyone needs some material I can send you a 2" chunk. These are cu...

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. It is not that hard. Here is what I did. I did both of the longerons together. I took a couple of pieces of wood (leftover cutouts from the aileron/flap holding jig) which had a nice gentle radius and put another piece of wood in between to provide enough gap f...

I went ahead and attached the rib to the bulkhead, then attached the rib to the skin. My only mess up was not leaving the forward most 2 holes un-riveted for where the center section overlaps. Oh well, 1 more rivet to drill out. I do have the Dynon AP servo bracket and it is also installed. Now I'm ...

Squawks? 1. Safeair static ports were not accurate at all...long story. Fixed em and moved on. Seems really accurate now. I'll bite. What's the story on the static ports? I have the latest incarnation of these. They look like they will stick out a bit past the skin surface, and are slightly machine...

one more question...
I'm in the midst of riveting the rear fuse section together. The instructions are pretty thin on what parts need to be connected at this point. They just mention bulkheads and skins getting riveted. Can I rivet on the F-729A stringer to the bottom skin now? I know that the F-706 bulkhead remains cle...

I did some more research (reading forums and websites) and saw that I needed to get the adel clamp holes dimpled. The rudder fairings can certainly wait. I'm going to try to make a pair from scratch and save some $. I've seen some people put platenuts down to hold the fairings on so they can remove ...

Things to do before final assembly of rear fuselage?
Got a bunch of stuff done this holiday weekend and I'm just about ready to do the final riveting of the rear fuselage section. Before I begin, is there anything else I should be thinking about doing before this goes together permanently? I'm thinking that my Safeair static ports could be put on, or ...

I'm just about to start doing the big bends on the fuselage longerons. I pulled down the long pieces and discovered the other angle pieces stashed up there with them. Looks like they are just extras. On the fuselage, I've already gone through most of the angle stock making various parts for the bulk...

Bruce, Your web site is great, and I have certainly been looking at it as I go. When I inquired about primer for JetFlex, they said that it was mostly needed for plastic. Metal doesn't require primer. I've been using the Akzo epoxy primer on the rest of the interior parts. I'm wondering if I should ...

another data point
My fuse kit came last month via FedEx ground. Got a bill later from Vans for $188 for the shipping. I was expecting to pay the driver, since I had to do that for the wing kit. Not sure why they deferred billing this time.

Jet Flex quantity for interior?
I'm ready to buy some Jet Flex water reducible paint for the interior. I'm going to be painting the parts as I go, rather than try to mask off everything later. I found a local supplier here, so I can buy it by the quart ($68!). Will 1 quart do the interior, or should I get 2? I'm leaning towards th...

Yes, I have a pair of those here in the garage. I got tired of doing the disposable latex gloves just to move parts around after prep and before priming. Good tip! So I got new parts fabricated this afternoon in about 1/3 the time. Match drilled this time with the correct parts in place. On to the r...

F-705G angles for tip up canopy
These things are hewn out of some pretty heavy angle stock. Spent 2 nights sawing, grinding, filing these things to perfection. It is hard to make swift progress if you are burning your fingers. This stuff heats up quick during any cutting and grinding. I clamp it inside the F-705 top channel, then ...

Inventory complete.
Three days of inventorying the fuselage kit. One word. Tedious. Missing a few bolts, platenuts, one bag of HW missing. Got 2 right versions of one part instead of a right and left. Called Van's today and they are going to get the missing stuff shipped out. There were a couple of backordered items, b...

SmugMug
I've done enough blogging and web site creation/maintenance to know how big a pain it can be (and time suck). For my project I am keeping it very simple. I set up an account with SmugMug for photo sharing. It costs $60 a year for unlimited storage of photos/videos and I can have it host my domain na...

I try to get out in the garage every night for at least 3 hours and lots of 12-14 hour days on the weekends. It is amazing how long it takes to do everything with a high level of quality, but time does fly when you are working on it. I do take off lots of evenings for family, so there is definitely ...
