Shooting primer in cold temps.
OK Guys, Here is the way I will shoot primer next week and it's freezing here too. I'm gonna buy a cheap door this week that fits the outside door of my shop. I will fit it so that it will plug the hole perfectly when I open the shop door wide open. I will be cutting a hole in the bottom half of the...

Glass or Steam,or....
Well, we are planning a glass cockpit with EFIS and EICAS just like the big boys. Having flown with this stuff on the 747-400 and 767-300 I know it works and it is better than steam. That said, all of the aforementioned machines have steam backup package of ASI, Altimeter, Artificial Horizon, and eve...

Air Canada's Paint Removal Scheme.
Guys, As a recently retired Air Canada 767 Captain, I will say a few things here. First of all, the aircraft in question is an old B767-200. One of the shortass, long in the tooth machines and these Montreal based aircraft are used over the winter months to fly from Vancouver to Maui. The -200's do ...

Well, you are right to think of the alignment problems arising from the pre-dimpling. I had problems with the hinge alignment without the dimpling. It seems difficult to get it all clamped together and still laying on a flat surface to get the trim tab trailing edge aligned with the rest of the elev...

Dan, Thanks for the info on the WhirlWind prop. I guess you got the RV prop, correct? I saw Colin this summer in Kelowna. I flew down in Hammy's RV-4 and had dinner with Colin and Barb after Colin scared the crap out of me in his AC Cobra on the way in from the airport. He showed me around his RV-8 ...

Dan, Thanks for the info re: Barts engine. We aren't ready to order yet but perhaps by late Spring of next year. Living in Kamloops, our engine will be from Bart for sure. He has even said that he will provide all the firewall forward stuff for our "8". How do you like the WW prop?? Are they still a...

Peter, I've just read through this thread again and one thing about your original post jumps out at me. The two aircraft you are comparing are to some extent, apples and oranges. The glass ship will be more slippery and have a higher approach and landing speed than the RV. You need to be sure that t...

I always finish off any cleaning job with silicone and wax remover before priming any bare metal. This stiff will take off wax so if there are any finger prints or oily residue that you missed, it cleans it all. I will definitely be using this stuff before painting the quickbuild components. (they a...

Capt. John, Long time been gone from the forum with moving and all. I was reading through this thread and have some new info for you in regard to engine choices. We have been doing some hours of talking with Bart Lalonde of Aerosport Power. He lives here in Kamloops so it's easy. We too were agonizi...

John, We picked up a set of locking caps at Van's when we picked up[ our wings and fuse. They seem pretty cool except that they have two different keys?!?!?!?! Now which one is for the left??? I can just see the confusion when refueling. The good thing about the locking, with the price of fuel, lock...

Colin, I missed you at the Vernon Fly-in on Fathers Day. It wasn't a bad day actually. There wasn't too much to look at but the RV turnout was good with seven in the lineup and some more being built in the hangars. I'm heading down to Delta sometime this week if the weather ever smartens up. I will ...

You need a GOOD torque wrench to work on any airplane, not just an RV. So, just buy a good one and you won't be sorry. They are as necessary as the socket set that they drive. There are lots of nuts and bolts to torque to spec on the RV. Even if you just work on your engine, you need a torque wrench...

You guys that are PLANNING on flying IFR better plan on installing an Autopilot first, before any IFR instrumentation. Speaking as a guy with a LOT of IFR hard time in the mountains of BC, and all over the world, I can tell you that single pilot IFR is not a piece of cake, nor is it for the faint of...
