I've got an Apollo 800 HVLP system with a pressurized top feed gun. It works pretty good, however I wish I had a slightly higher capacity turbine. Some of the thicker primers take a bit of pressure to atomize properly. My only recommendation is don't undersize your system. Make sure you can shoot th...

I finished the canopy frame rails yesterday as well. The frame slides quite nicely at this point.

Chad,

Yep, it's getting the ACI 3-blade. 68" in diameter which seems to be optimal for a 3-blade. I guess I should have enough ground clearance:-)

Major Progress

I took a day off this week and got some major work done on the 8. With the help of RV-7 builder Pat Ray and RV-8 builder/pilot Scott Jordan I installed the landing gear and wheels and riveted the aft top skin on. It is really beginning to look like an airplane. If it looks a little unusual it is bec...

I'm 5'11" and 260# (Yea, I know another fat one) and have no problem in the back of my friend's 8. I have flown in the passenger seat of a 7 and while a bit cramped, it was flyable, but I wouldn't want to do it for a long trip. I think that the 8 is the best choice for anyone over about 180#, unless...

To make up for this long useless thread, everyone that is not using Verizon should call CJ as much as possible.

I have a bunch of these drills and love them. You can get an adapter from Cleveland Tools to replace you drill chuck. I have one drill with a normal chuck and one with a QC chuck. I also found countersink cages with QC shafts on Ebay. The drill with the QC chuck is smaller and lighter than the one w...

I have found the 45 deg. drill very useful but there have been occasions where it would not fit and I needed the 90 deg. drill. I am glad I have both.

You can always find angle drills on Ebay fairly cheap. Usually aerospace surplus that means they are generally high quality units. I have a couple of them plus a 45 deg. drill which is very useful as well.

The only TSO'd items you need for an experimental plane are a transponder and ELT. Nothing else needs to be TSO'd, so you might as well save any money you can and get non-TSO'd stuff where possible.

More Panel Progress

With the exception of my little indicator lights, I have finished wiring my panel. It is designed to be removable, so all connections off the panel are through several connectors. Now all I have to do is finish the harnesses within the airframe. The next step is to build my breaker panel. I have pow...

You pretty much have to grab hangars when you can. I got one at KPOU and I probably won't need it for at least another 4-5 months, but I didn't want to chance not getting it when I need it.

For the Garmin stuff the best price is Stark Avionics. Nobody can beat them and they are good people to work with.

I just registered mine. I wanted to get it done as you hear horror stories about how long it takes the FAA to complete the process. I ended up getting my registration certificate within 3 weeks.

Fun with Wires

I have been working on my panel wiring. What a project. I bought my radios from Stark Avionics and he makes the basic wiring harness but there is a lot to do to complete it so I have wires running everywhere in my shop right now. I'm amazed at how many wires there really are behind the panel. I have...

Lance, Although I am sure that it is possible to use ethanol in an airplane under the right conditions, I would be very careful as there are a number of issues using ethanol in a normal airplane engine. First you need to ensure that any rubber components such as o-rings are the proper material. Etha...

My First Passenger - Sort Of

Things are moving along nicely. I have finished running most of the wiring that goes to the fuselage aft of the spar and to the wings. I received my seats from Oregon Aero and thought is was time to see how they felt so I got my girlfriend to sit in the rear seat. She is quite excited about getting ...

NO! Not anyone can maintain an experimental. You as the builder who have been given a repairman cert. by the FAA can maintain your own home built. If you were a non builder that owns an experimental then you would have to have an A&P maintain your plane or work a deal with the original holder of th...
