Re: Interior/seat choices

+1 on the Oregon Aero foam. It is sooo comfortable. After flying all day, you don't want to get out of the seat. I had Abby at Flightline cover them in Ultraleather and she did an outstanding job finding the colors we wanted and they turned out great. Ultraleather is synthetic, but very durable. No ...

Re: Too quiet for the week before OSH

I'll be coming on on Sunday and leaving Thursday morning. My wife is coming this year, so no camping. We will be in the dorms (with A/C!). Look for the purple RV-9A and say hi if I'm around. We should be at all of the usual events, HBC beer bash on Sunday, RV beer bash on Monday, Van's banquet on Tu...

Re: OSHKosh Beer Tasting

I have officially firmed up my plans to be at Oshkosh this summer! Other than the HBC beer tasting, what's the social calendar looking like this year? I know there is an RV beer bash on Wednesday, too. Any request from the beer Mecca that is San Diego? At last count we had over 100 microbreweries in...

Re: STOL in an RV?

I've never landed on grass. Not enough rain in SoCal to keep anything green past winter. That being said, the RV-9A is usually up and climbing in well less than 1000'. Put 10 degrees of flaps down and it will practically pop off the ground. You'll have to be quick to retract the flaps, since flap sp...

So glad you found that! Stuff like that is sobering to say the least. So many parts, and so many potential tiny things that can lead to catastrophe.

Hope to see you flying soon!

Re: Tips on trimming the forward end of the cowl?

Dave, Are you talking about the overlap on the sides? You want to cut out a nice 1/4" thick circle of plywood about 13" diameter to show how the front end of the cowl will end up against the spinner. Get the middle of the cowl looking similarly circular by sanding down a little at a time whatever is...

Re: Finding a good Paint Shop

Got my daughter and her friend to drive me up to Corona on Friday to reassemble the airplane. Spent most of the morning getting the tail back together. The middle bolt that connects the two elevators together is a major pain to get the washers back in between everything. Had to rewire up the trim se...

Going to pick it up today!

A couple of photos from the painter.

Re: Quick build order

The canopy was the most difficult part of the build for me. Once that was done, it was all downhill! The other big thing that slowed me down was just getting off my wallet to spend the $$ necessary to keep the project moving along. It is easy to make quick progress if everything you need is sitting ...

Re: RIP Co-Pilot Wyatt

My little dog was born deaf, so he is quite happy in a noisy airplane, and no hearing protection required!

As long as he has a lap to sit in, he's happy.

Re: Fresh meat!!!

Welcome! My daughter is doing her Doctorate currently at Univ. of Utah, so we have made several trips up there and will be planning more once the weather gets warmer. I'm sure you can find someone local to get a ride. Get the airplane done, then worry about getting the PPL. I went about 23 years wit...

Re: Finding a good Paint Shop

I want it painted so it doesn't look like every other unpainted RV! Nothing wrong with bare aluminum, especially if it is polished up a bit. Although, the glare can be annoying at times. I don't think I would ever waste any time trying to keep it polished. Wife says paint it, so you can probably gue...

Re: Finding a good Paint Shop

So it looks like the design is pretty much done. Just waiting on the final specs. I've got a slot at a local paint shop on March 20, 2017.
Can't wait to get some color on this bird!
Hopefully, the downtime will be minimal.

Re: Landing on ICE! (Alton Bay - 1B8)

There is a drone footage of CJ and I landing but I need to figure out if all is kosher to make it public. The drone is registered and the pilot is remote certified. I just got my Remote Pilot, UAS cert. I'd probably keep the video private unless you had approval/notification to the airport manageme...

Re: My buddy got a drone...

I also just got my Remote Pilot certificate. I did get a drone for Christmas, but it is more toy than anything. Still lots of fun! If you have your PPL, getting the Remote Pilot certificate is super easy. Take the online course (takes about an hour), pass a test and then get an appointment at the FS...

2016 Flying Stats

Happy New Year, all of you Rivetbangers!

Here is a summary of my 2016 Flying.

Not quite as impressive as Vlad's year, but I did better my hours flown by +1 from last year.

Looking forward to more fun in 2017 (and maybe some paint?)

Re: Official guidance for drilling holes in wing spar center section

I used the holes on the sides of the spar for things like the buttons on the stick, COMM antenna coax and remote wires for the ELT. I had plenty of room in the two holes down the center tunnel, but it will heavily depend on where you put your antennas, how many coax wires, where you put your avionic...
