More non-annual maintenance

Another blog posting. This time more than one issue at a time. Hoping to be back in the air this weekend, since my autopilot servo should be back from Dynon tomorrow.

Re: RV7 transponder antenna location

You can mount the transponder behind the baggage compartment rear bulkhead and put the antenna down in the rear part of the fuselage. I mounted it on the side of the center rib. The advantage here is not having to have a long coax run through the cabin. https://photos.smugmug.com/RV-9A-Project/Wirin...

Re: Newbie with Pneumatic Squeezer Woes

Sticker shock over tools??? Just wait until you fill your panel, buy a prop and an engine! The money you spend on tools is a pittance compared to almost everything else on the airplane. Good tools make it a breeze to build, so don't skimp on them. For the RV-10, be prepared to lay down well north of...

Trip to Oshkosh 2018 blog post

I finally found some time to create another blog entry about our trek to Oshkosh.

You can also skip ahead to the photo album here.

Another great time at Airventure, except for the arrivals.

Beer has been procured! I'll be bringing some tall cans of Beachwood Amalgamator IPA, and the son will be bringing something too.

Oshkosh 2018

Looks like I will be attending again! Just got word too from my son that he has got the time off from his work and is going to come along with me. Back to tenting it in the HBC area this year. Looking forward to seeing all of the RB folks again. So what's the schedule going to be? Sunday Homebuilt b...

Re: Bonderite (alodine) or not?

I gave up on the alodine about halfway through building the wings. The pieces got bigger than the smaller tail pieces and the toxicity of it got me generally against spending the time and expense trying to do brush it on or dip it prior to priming. I found that just cleaning the aluminum with a scot...

Re: Quick build kits

The quick-build quality is very good. If you are a meticulous builder, your quality will (may) be better, but there are many builders who cannot come close to the quick-build level of finish. I've seen some pretty bad slow build quality. Slow build gives you the opportunity to do everything "your wa...

Copperstate Trip

Too quiet around here! I've been flying all over the place enjoying the RV-9A.

I made it out to the Copperstate Fly In in Mesa, AZ last month and wrote about my experience on my blog.

Re: Happy thanksgiving

Yes, it has been too quiet here lately. We had a nice Thanksgiving Day. Drove our Chevy Bolt EV up to LA and back from San Diego. GM advertises at 238 mile range and this trip is 116 miles each way. Made it up and back with 20-25 miles left of range. We did plug it in up there briefly, but the 110V ...

Re: Oct 7 Fall Foliage and Chili Fly-In at 1P1

A bit far from SoCal, and we are having our open house at Ramona Airport that day. I might even fly some Young Eagles for the first time.

Wish I could be there! No more east coast business trips in my immediate future. And certainly no fall foliage out west.

Solar Eclipse trip to Oregon and Idaho

Took off Friday to head to Oregon and the Van's Homecoming and Wings over Willamette event, then over to Garden Valley, Idaho to do some whitewater rafting and viewing of the eclipse. Amazing trip! The eclipse was only 2 minutes at totality, but a once in a lifetime thing to experience. Back home fr...

Re: Info needed for engine purchase

If you can go new, then Van's really has the best deal on Lycoming's. They usually have a deal going around Oshkosh to get a discount if you buy the prop/engine combo.
