Video from INSIDE the cockpit - Subie sounds
My friend Benny Butler came up from Missouri this week so we could present the Eggenfellner H6 engine to our chapter on Thursday night. We had a GREAT turnout, and everybody enjoyed the presentation.
The next day, Benny took me out for a flight in his RV-7-
This time, I shot video from the INSIDE (just for you Scott!!). This is cool!!

Here is the same airplane on takeoff last weekend at Rebel's Bluff from the outside-

Very interesting sound. My wife asked, "Are you watching a motorcycle?"
Hmmph. Women.
The plane looked like it was climbing pretty good when you were inside taping but his takeoff at Rebel's Bluff looked like the plane didn't want to climb that well.
It sure sounds smoother than a Lycoming. Thanks for posting these!

I think the strip at Rebel's Bluff was 2000' give or take a hundred. It has pucker factor on both ends...trees and both ends have a dogleg approach to short final unless you come in REALLY steep.
As far as the climbout of Rebel's Bluff, Benny is not a show off, and he was climbing comfortably, not full potential.
When I shot the video's from inside, we sustained 1800fpm. I tried to get it on the video, but the readout is so small on the Dynon that when YouTube brings the quality down, it's impossible to see. He usually climbs out at 100mph at 1400fpm.
I flew it Friday morning and did a high speed pass at Jack Holland's house...saw 2500fpm in the zoom climb...
When he left Bloomington on Friday afternoon, it was 82 degrees, and one of our mechanics said "That thing is climbing out of here like a rocket!" Not really, it just sounds like it!

Brother Chad,
In the videos, there was a whistling noise (I know the acoustics stink on the youtube videos). Was this the engine, or a canopy air leak?
Lastly, in your Book of Subarism, do you have any other RV gospel on performance in terms of fuel burn vs speed witht he H-6? Of course, there should be an improvement with the new redrive. My engine efficiency target is 186mph at no more than 8 gph.
Carl (an engine agnostic still)

Anyway, I didn't notice the whistling noise at all when we were flying the airplane. When I played the video for the first time, I wondered the same thing. I *think* it was wind noise as Benny's canopy does fit a slight bit to the right side. The engine and redrive will make a slight whistle at certain power settings, but it's way more subtle than what you hear in the video.
As far as performance goes, the table (with the new redrive) on the performance page of the Egg website seems acurate when compared to what Benny is getting in his 7. The numbers for the 9 are different, but the table shows 190mph at 8.2gph and 183mph at 7.3gph (for a 7A), so 186 at 8 seems reasonable. Benny is getting 185mph at 7.2gph in his 7. I can't remember exactly what John said he was getting in his 9A in high speed cruise, but I do remember him saying 135KTS at 5gph, which is 155mph in economy cruise.
Here's a quote from Andy Parish from this morning on the Egg site...he just had the new redrive and exhaust put on his 7A-
Hopefully we'll get the performance numbers from Andy's trip in the next day or two.Andy Parish wrote: Jan,
I had an uneventful trip back. The climb performance to 9000 was noticeably better. Cruise was maybe 2-3 knots faster for the same fuel flow but basically the same. I could, however run a lower prop rpm at 9000 than I was able to do on the way down due to the added engine rpm. You need to add power smoothly on takeoff since the need for rudder is noticeably greater. I'll send you a note tomorrow with my performance #s from the trip. Thanks for an enjoyable and educational day yesterday.
Andy
Well, it's sort of like Van's being a "dealer" for Lycoming engines. Eggefellner had this prop developed for them, and in doing so, they no longer offer the other prop options. That's not to say that you can't get one and put it on. In fact, I don't think Egg ever offered the IVO prop thru them. They did offer the Warp Drive, but not IVO. Benny's 7 has the IVO Magnum on it, and it performs beautifully. He will be switching to the new redrive soon, and will keep the same prop.
The blades are from Sensenich, and are VERY expensive to manufacture...the reason for the ground adjustable version being $3500.
