Anyone read the write up in the latest EAA mag? If you haven't, it's an inverted two stroke diesel. Sounds like a promising option. A quick look at their site, and they offer a 4 cylinder 160hp version.

Keith-

What month is that article in? I didn't see is while browsing through my collection in my Library (i.e. bathroom).

I stopped getting excited about alternative engines a while ago. Thielert, Innodyn, Eggenfellner, etc. all of them have had some promise but have always crashed in the end. For me to buy into a new style engine it would need to have some years in the field worth of experience. I don't see too many alternative engines making it with this test. Is it worth $20k+ "experiment" to see if it does work? In my book, no. Not only a financial decision, but also a safety decision. Could the air cooled Lycomings and clones indeed be the best type of affordable engine for an airplane? More and more I am starting to think so.

Sorry, didn't mean to tear into your thread Keith. Just pointing out some facts combined with some personal ranting!

It's part of the Bud Davisson article on the Thorp Thorpedo that was in the latest issue.

I'm also pretty much in agreement with you on most all of your points regarding all of the alternative engine choices. The test of time is a very good litmus test.

Still I like reading about attempts to change the status quo. If nobody tried something knew we would all still be hoofing it.

Oh yeah, I totally agree! I just think companies are too busy PR'ing their untested products instead of testing them and then releasing it when its truly ready for prime time. My personal belief is the electric motor / battery pack will win in the end. I just don't think motor and battery technology is good enough yet.

man i dont see how. :? But i think you are probally correct.

batteries seem to be making some strides.....

funny, I was just saying that to someone this past weekend. :) With a nice little lightweight generator to keep the packs charged up if needed.
