Do I NEED electric pitch trim?

Post by cjensen »

Been trying to pin down an autopilot, and I thought of something today...My airplane being all manual and all, do I need electric pitch trim for an autopilot (Specifically the ADI Pilot II) to work?

From flying Jack's airplane, I know the TT AP's work with manual aileron trim, and the AP's don't care about flaps, but what about pitch?

Many of them give a trim indication on their control head if they want you to make a trim change if you dont have electric trim.

Chad,

I am not sure, but I would expect it to complain to you (in the form of an indicator light) that the trim pressures are too great and force you to manually trim. This is pretty much the same with all TT AP's right up to, but not including the Sorcerer.

Okay, so this means I'm good to go with manual trim?

Now that I think about it, it seems like my friend Dave with a 7A did that when I flew with him. He has a Digitrack II, with Alt Hold, and manual pitch trim... :bang:

Thanks for triggering the memory!

Chad,

Just a confirmation: I have an ADI Pilot II, and it has no provision for connection to an electric trim. Manual trim is installed in my airplane, and although it hasn't flown yet, both TruTrak and Stein say it will work great in my plane.

Thanks Pat!! That's exactly what I needed to know! ADI Pilot II is now officially on my panel plan sheet!

Wasn't it the straw man that wanted a brain. Chad come on man you're wishy washy not stupid. In fact the appearance of wishy washy shows that you're not stupid just confused. You should be the lion, he wanted courage. Courage to stand up and say " Yes I want suby gawd dang it and I don't care what you think Yukon I'm goin for it". Straw man you're not.

 Jim, I got a chuckle out of that now that I see who it's from...when I read it thru email this morning, there was no signature, and I took it completely differently, 'cuz I didn't know who wrote it!

I can see how the avatar could be taken that way. I just thought it was funny since he never knew which way to go...

I appreciate the sentiment that I am not the straw man. I agree, but I'm always going to look in all directions to make the final decision. They are becoming more and more clear all the time (like the fact that the Subaru option is not even on my list any longer...ESPECIALLY after Oshkosh, and what was floating around the RV-10 Egg/Dan brought).

Yukon is entitled to his opinion, and we all know he is not open to new, unproven things, and I can't blame him for that.

I wouldn't say I'm confused, just a curious individual.

Sorry to take this thread way OT...

Back to the subject at hand-

Well I'm glad you got a chuckle cause that was the intention. I do have to be careful though, I had just gotten home from going out to dinner and perhaps had one or two too many an IPA under the ol belt. What would that be a PUI (posting under the influance).
