Benchtesting Transponder

Post by dahugo »

As I install each item in my panel I am hitting it with 12 volts to make sure everything fires up.

I prepared the Molex plug for my KT76 and hit it with 12 volts (all the while with the antenna output attached to a 50 ohm dummy load.) As soon as it powered up, I heard a high pitched hum. Not loud, but present.

Anyone have a KT76? Is that supposed to happen?

Also, how do I make sure it works right? I have a scanner that will hit 1090 Mhz but what do I listen for when I power up the transponder to know it works OK?

Thanks,

HUGO

Yes, thats normal.

Without a XPDR test set you won't get it do anything. It won't transmit without being interegated by a radar (noted by the red indication light flashing in flight).

Short answer, install it and fly it
