Starting on the panel
Starting on the panel
The last piece of the panel puzzle has arrived. I got my Dynon Skyview Comm and Intercom delivered this week.
I've got a fairly simple layout figured out for the panel. Now I just need to start cutting some holes and get everything mounted for final wiring.
I'm going to start with the location of the Dynon SV 1000 display in front of the pilot. COM and intercom to the right of the display. A row of switches under the display for lighting/boost pump/etc. Key switch for the starter on the left side of the panel. The master and avionics switches above the key switch. I have one round gauge (Electronic Ignition Commander) to the left of the SV display. ELT remote on the far right, along with some 12V outlets. Some dimmers in the center along with cabin heat knob. A couple of annunicator lights above the SV display. The right side of the panel is blank, but will probably get a portable GPS or iPad mounted there. Plus the usual FAA required placards.
Wish me luck! I'll be posting photos of my progress on my web pages. After this is done, it is going to the airport for final assembly.

Too darned cool dude. I checked the site though and the pictures to time waiting ratio is all wrong.

I got the rest of the panel all cut out today.
Need to do some countersinking, rivet on the nutplates, some priming and painting.
Should I paint the panel in the interior color (JetFlex grey beige), or go flat black, or do something else (powdercoat, vinyl overlay)? I'm leaning toward just going with the interior color that I already have. I also still need to figure out how I want to label everything.

Bruce,
With regard to paint, all of those options should be fine.
Me? I am planning on doing Rustoleum Texture Finished gray.
I want a dull, repairable, simple and smudge-free finish.

Panel was painted the interior color a few weeks ago. Time to begin installing all of the avionics and switches.

Funny, except for the dull, that pretty much describes you, CJ!

Probably put a Garmin 796 in the center and an iPad on the other side for "inflight entertainment". I don't need those to get airworthy, so those will be later additions.

Labels on this weekend. I used the Decalpro system with some help from another builder. It is a complex process, but by the time you have all the labels done, you get the hang of it. Some flat Krylon Clear Coat was sprayed over everything. It came out great.
I have just a few more connections to make for the switches, warning lights and dimmers.

A nice long holiday weekend was some really productive time in the garage. I finished up all of the wiring! I got all of the switches wired up, then installed the display and finally the rest of the little items like dimmers. I went back and redid all of the plastic tie wraps and then replaced them with lacing cord. My fingers are still sore from tying knots tight. I also put in the correct size adel clamps in the various locations that held the wiring harnesses. This probably took me over 20 hours over 3 days. Today I updated the firmware on the Vertical Power VP-X box and got the master switch working. I need to test all of the circuits now and get the Dynon Skyview updated.
I am going to be moving the fuselage over to the airport next weekend! Tail and wings are already there.
