How I spent my Saturday

Post by painless »

Today was one of those days that go down in the personal archives as a real keeper.

First, I flew down to Janesville, WI and had a nice lunch with my Mother and Stepfather at the CAVU Cafe. A nice 1.25 hour flight from MNM.

Sorry to say Kirk, I didn't have time to come visit you at East Troy, as I had a very important appointment to get to in Manitowoc, WI. My loving wife had gotten me a half hour ride in an SNJ by the folks at Topgun out of Florida for Xmas last year. So after a 45 minute flight to MTW, I got my ride. Really special for me, as my uncle was a Naval aviator, doing instruction in an SNJ for instrument flying. He gave me my first airplane ride many moons ago in a 172. Sorry to say, he passed away this year, so I could not return the favor in the RV.

Then a half hour flight from MTW back to MNM. All told, 3 hours that will not be counted toward my total lifetime.

I am sure it was the fastest .5 hours you ever spent in an airplane!

Cool!

Well, since you asked Spike......

It was obviously awsome! What a chunck of an airplane. I again understand why there is the adage that airplanes are supposed to have round engines. 600hp barking right in front of me. Way cool!

We did some formation flying with a T-6. Watching it form up on us was outstanding. Now I see why the guys that do formation flying with RVs have so much fun at it. Still not sure if I am up to the task tho.

After the formation flying, we went out over the lake (Michigan, that is) and did some acro. First an aileron roll, then a barrel roll, followed by a loop. The basics. The pilot kept asking me if I was feeling ok.....No barf bag here! After each manuever, like at the bottom of the loop, he would pitch that airplane up, I would say at least 40 degrees, and gain back all his altitude he lost in the dive he did to gain airspeed. Momentum was the key, as the pilot explained.

Then it was back to the airport for a victory pass down the runway and landing. Just as he was ready to turn base, he cut power and we slowed down right NOW. He did a carrier approach to the runway, and I was amazed at how much he was pointing that airplane toward the ground! Really steep approach.

Guess the kids will have to pay for their own college education, since I'm gonna go buy one now!

Trouble is, I would have to mortgage the house to pay for the gas every year! :o

I think I'll stick with the RV.

Gotta tell you guys that are still pounding rivets....It is all worth it. I had an absolute BLAST yesturday, and not just because I flew an SNJ. Its also because I flew an airplane that I built, all over the state. Its hard to put into words. You will know what I mean once you get your projects airbourne.

Build on, brothers and sisters!

I do a lot of formation flying, and with the right bunch of pilots it is a blast.
Glad you had a great time. I'm sure it was one you will remember for a lifetime.

Above is me in my RV-4. You know you are getting to be a good wingy when you can even keep the prop spining in formation/sync.

Sounds like you had a real blast Jeff, something you will never forget, thanks for sharing, even if you can't really get it into words that do it justice.

This Past Saturday, We had the honor of flying a missing man formation for the Comair 5191 crash victims. The special part was our LEAD was a Beautiful T-6. So we had this huge T6 as lead, with 4 RV8s as the flight. It was pretty cool, and the crowd LOVED it.
