Numbers are starting to flow...

Post by cjensen »

After 17 hours of flying, I finally have some solid numbers to report. I'm flying with gear leg fairings, but no wheel pants. I do have a *slightly* heavy left wing that I haven't dealt with yet, but it's not encumbering results.

I screwed up my fuel management a little bit on the test flight to 3500' a couple days ago to test fuel burn, so all I got was total burn from start to shut down, and that was 8.4gph at 2450rpm, resulted in 152kts true.

Last night, I did the same test flight (with proper fuel management) to 5500', and had an overall fuel burn rate start to shutdown of 7.2gph (6.5 gallons total added after .9 on the hobbs), with 8.4gph being burned in cruise flight: again 2450rpm, and 154kts true, 30 minute cruise on the right tank only, 4.2 gallons added after.

I plan to do one more at that rpm at 7500', then repeat all of them at 2500 and 2600 rpm.

Fuel pressure has been solid at 2.6, oil pressure 68, oil temp 196 (cooler off #4, no angle mount), EGT's are running 1290-1310, and I still have the odd side to side split of CHT's with the left side running 60-80 degrees cooler than the right, but all temps within limits. Left side cyl's 2 and 4 are running 300 and the right side cyl's 1 and 3 are running 370 or so.

That split is curious, but I think has more to do with the extra exit area off the left side due to the oil cooler. Being a carb'd engine could have a lot to do with it as well. I need to check the bottom plugs for oil to see if the rings have seated on the right side too...

Overall, this thing is a total blast to fly, and I'm enjoying every second of it!!!

not too shabby. Thanks for the report. Glad to hear your not running hot. The CHT split is interesting wonder how you'll figure out what is up.

I've heard of a few people with James cowls, having heat issues. So sometimes worry about my set up. I even thought about putting all the extra cooling ports(Pmags & ALT) off the left side rear to help balance flows within the plenum. eh...maybe later.
