I blew his door off anyway! This past weekend I was number two for departure following a Mooney (M20E model). He called ready and said he was heading northbound at 2500'. I didn't have a plan of attack for this particular flight other than to set up a cruise configuration at some point and fly for an hour in that setting. So...I (not we) decided to race him to the 7 mile call (airspace ring at our airport).

He took off, made his climb off of runway 2 with a slight turn to about 340 degrees. After he was clear, with a good 3/4 mile head start, tower cleared me for takeoff. I took a heading of 360 to 2500', then let 'er rip!!

I made up the 3/4 mile, and made the 7 mile call 12 seconds before he did (my count). Hehe...but this wasn't a race...

Nice. and you can bet while not a race he noticed and won't be posting anything on the Mooney websites.

Of course you are assuming that he he called as soon as he was at the ring. He might have called a mile outside of it or even a mile inside of it....

I was approached by a guy in a 200 hp Globe Swift who wanted to form up on my wing.

I had to throttle back the 180 hp -6 to 2,200 rpm in order for him to keep up!
