Father's Day Flight to Catalina

Post by bruceh »

My son offered to buy me lunch if I took him somewhere in the RV-9A for Father's Day. The weather has been super warm the last couple of days, and my recent flights have been way too warm (it was 112 in Mesa, AZ on Friday). Obama was playing golf in Palm Springs so the big TFR blocked off my usual favorite place in Hemet. Where to go? Let's go to Santa Catalina Island and get some Buffalo Burgers.

Photos are here.

Lots of GoPro footage was taken, but I leave the video editing up to my son. He is in the process of buying his first condo, so it may be a while before he gets around to posting the video.

I ended up buying the 1 year membership in the Friends of the Airport Club, so now I can go as many times as I want and no landing fees (normally $25). That was my Father's Day present to myself. I figured that between my wife and 3 kids, other family and friends I should break even quickly. Everyone loves flying over to Catalina Island.

Awesome trip report, Bruce! Catalina Island is definitely a destination on my bucket list. Too bad the west coast is so far away!

Still costs $25, but if you buy the year membership for $150 you get unlimited landings.

CJ: Let me know when you are coming and I can get you in for free.
