AOPA Fly In at Prescott, AZ

Post by bruceh »

My wife and I spent an enjoyable day flying out to Arizona to the AOPA Fly In at Prescott.

We got up later than I was planning, but still were in the air before 9am and got to the show before 11am. Smooth air the whole way out, but as we got near Prescott the clouds were just starting to build. The NOTAM arrival had us following the highway up to the field and we got cleared to shortcut it quite a bit by ATC. After landing on 21L they parked us on the closed runway 30/12 way down at the end. We then got shuttled via golf cart over to a bus and then made it around to the other side of the airport where the show was taking place. We got lunch, wandered around the static displays and watched the airshow from noon to 1pm. It was starting to look like the weather might bring some rain, so we headed back to the airplane to make our departure. We did get some rain drops on us as we taxied in a long, long line of airplanes to take off. We finally got in the air after a long 30 minutes or so. My oil temps were about as hot as I've seen them at 205 degrees and the cylinder temps stayed below 350. We had a much bumpier ride on the way back, staying under the cloud bases at 8500'. Back across the desert to Ramona airport in under 2 hours, we landed before 4pm. Back with plenty of time to watch USC beat Arizona State  (Fight On!) on TV.

Photo album is here.
