Sierra Vista, AZ trip

Post by bruceh »

Veteran's Day gave me and the wife both a 3 day weekend. We did a belated 28th Wedding anniversary getaway to southeast Arizona for some sight seeing. Took off early Friday morning to clear skies and were landed in Sierra Vista, AZ at FHU Fort Huachuca-Libby Airfield. On the sectional it looks pretty scary surrounded by nothing but TFR's and restricted airspace, but the airfield is just an uncontrolled field on holidays and weekends whenever the tower is closed. Took under 3 hours to fly out there with a bit of a headwind. Picked up our rental car at the FBO and headed up to Kartchner Caverns. This is a relatively new State Park and the caves are incredible and pristine. After that we drove into Tombstone, which was very touristy. Next day we hit the Coronado National Memorial and were up close to the Mexican border area. On to Bisbee, which is a funky little old mining town now very artsy. We had a great time on the Queen Mine tour exploring the copper and silver mining inside the mountains. Outside is a huge open pit mine which is also quite impressive. They dug up 8 billion pounds of copper here! We headed back on Sunday morning and had more sunny skies and a bit of a tailwind to speed us back to California. We packed a lot of fun into a couple of days and could not have done it without our magic carpet the RV-9A.

Photo album is here.
