If anyone's interested you can take a look at a quick write up I did for a trip to Shelter Cove two friends and I took this past Sunday. Of course we each brough our own RV...an RV-6A, an RV-8, and an RV-4 (that would be yours truly.)
Anyway, take a look if you care to.

Shelter Cove is a great flight for the day or overnite, I haven't been there in years. Do they still have the Elk that hangout next to the runway. We used to walk by, and they'd just stand there and glear at you. There's probably a lot more people there now..........Larry

Well I haven't posted anything in a while, working too much and enjoying reading some of your guys/gals posts...... I've been kind of depressed about the whole RV thing because it seems like I am so far away from doing anything on my kit. Only a builder on hold knows the feeling.
Scott you should have emailed me if you were coming in! I didn't drive by the North end of the airstrip on Sunday, but I did stop and talk to another RV'er (Hank and Monica, RV-4) There was also an RV-3 owned by Bill of Fortuna.
No elk on the airport anymore, the herd moved down to the State park, just south. A lot of Shelter Cove goats(deer), fox, and an occasional bear though. No place to hanger your plane out of the weather, but good fish and chips, and Salmon season is open. There are more amenities on the South end. Deli, fishing charters, boat ramp, surfing, and a couple more restaurants. It's a beautiful place to live, but a little hard to make a living unless you swing a hammer. The building is going crazy. I think there was 76 houses being built this last year, and I think it's more this year.
Hank was showing off on take-off. He stayed in ground effect a while to build speed, pulled up hard, 75 deg. hard right, 75 deg. hard left, almost into a Chandelle level off. It's killin' me. I'm going to go back to sulking.

No, I think it's mostly Rotarians that hang out by the runway now.l & d lewis wrote:Shelter Cove is a great flight for the day or overnite, I haven't been there in years. There is a nice little Inn right on the edge of the breakers there that would have some stunning views from it's rooms. Again, about a 1 minute walk from the northern tie down area. Great place, I want to go back! If anyone else wants to visit, the locals say that late August, September, and October are the best times of the year to visit because the fog has moved off the cost. For those of you not familiar with this area, the coastline here is shrouded in fog for much of the year. It's high so not a problem for IFR types but us VFR types have to do some careful planning.
Doggone! I wish I'd have known! We had 3 RV's there we WOULD HAVE given you an inspiration flight in the RV of your choice had we known. I saw the RV-4 take off and saw the RV-3 parked on the SO end. So who owns all those expensive houses? It must be you right?aerial wrote:Scott you should have emailed me if you were coming in! Well now that I know there is a 'banger in Shelter Cove I won't make this mistake again.

Oops... that was me. I've only been in the computer industry about 20 years. Why should I have to remember to log in just because I switch to Firefox (finally.)Anonymous wrote:Doggone! The expensive homes are owned by people of various backgrounds because not too long ago you could by land here for dirt cheap. Mostly retired folks, fishermen, and carpenters. 15 years ago you could buy lots on the ocean for $5,000. There ares still land deals around, but the ones on the airstrip are all high priced being right on the ocean. There is a lot of speculation right now, but plenty of buildable lots left. As an example, I paid $13,000 for my lot 3 years ago. My lot is now worth about $40-50k. The contractors are getting $110-150/sq.ft. for houses which isn't cheap. But if you build it yourself you can do it for cheaper. The road is lousy and we live in the middle of nowhere. You can't really leave your plane year round on the tarmac because of the strong storms and winds we get. The closest airport inland is 26 mi. to Garverville and you would have to sign a lease with the county to build a hanger (which they would own when done). The fog is not as bad as you think here, not as much as in Eureka or on the Mendicino coast. We have a little bannana belt here. No redwoods right on the coast here because of the belt which keeps it too dry. We are right on the San Andreas fault, in fact the fault goes inland at Shelter Cove, and back out to sea just north of the Cove. There are 2 other faults that intersect north of here. The dramatic coast line is here for a reason.
I have a house "shell" up and am working full-time trying to earn money to finish it (hence my RV-no-go woes). I got married this year and I'm a little tired of cooking in the motorhome, but if you bring your tents or sleeping bags we can accomodate you. Call for reservations
