Flap Positioning with Dynon FD 180

Post by dahugo »

Gentlemen, I am 1/4 owner in an RV-9A, but only two of us are actually building the thing. In any case, the other builder and his buddy, who are doing most of the metal and painting while I deal with electronics, installed the flaps, rods, flap motor, etc. Problem is they cannot find any of the documentation for the thing. What i'm left with is a motor with a red and black wire, a flap switch that looks like a DPDT (6 poles, 3 on each side, temporary on)----that's it.

As I have a Dynon FD 180 and want to interface the flaps with the Dynon, seems like I need a Flap Position Sensor that takes 5 volts.

Is that correct? Is that all I will need to buy, something like the Ray Allen Flap Sensor or should there be one with the RV-9 Kit we purchased?

Flap Positioning with Dynon FD 180

None comes with the Van's flap kit. What you have is what comes with
it. You will have to purchase and figure out how to install some sort
of position sensor. The Ray Allen flap sensor will work as would any
number of other solutions. I used the Ray Allen sensor, although I
can't remember which actuation length I bought. I installed it in the
rear of the center housing where the flap mechanism is enclosed and
hooked it with a short pivoting arm to the central arm that the flap
motor is connected to.

I think it is the POS-12 sensor that I used. It works great. Hook up one side to ground, the other to the 5v supply from the Dynon and the wiper to the input on the Dynon. Calibrate and your done!!!

I mounted the sensor in the flap motor housing area and used a model airplane pushrod connected to an adel clamp that was clamped really close to the pivot point of the flap actuator arm. I put it so I got the max travel out of the POS-12 sensor without over travel as this could break the sensor.

The flap switch gets wired in a cris cross fashion to reverse the polarity going to the flap motor to make it run fwd and backwards.

Take a look at the Aeroelectric connection website. Lots of good info there.
