Control column mounts

Post by cjensen »

The plans say that the control column can be removed as a whole once it has been fitted to the F-704 bulkhead, leaving the mounts on like this-

Right now I have the control column in place, but it's ready to come off, so I can finish the bulkhead.

I'm wondering why Van's calls for just removing the control column assembly and leaving the mounts. The assembly is attached with a series of washers that are fun to get in place (I'm being sarcastic here  ), and removing them and reinstalling later doesn't sound like fun.

Why can't the whole thing come off the bulkhead, INCLUDING the mounts? That just means four bolts. Those of you ahead of me...what's the deal here?

Sure, the mounts CAN come off. In fact, they WILL have to come off in order to effectively buck the lower skin rivets.

Mine are still on right now. I just haven't gotten around to removing them.

Sounds like I'll be able to modify four seat ribs, rather than two, to gain the necessary clearance to get the whole assembly in on the mounts. Tha plans call for modifying the two ribs either side of center, but the next one on each side can also be modded with no ill effects.

In a post of mine some time ago I suggested people modify four seat ribs instead of just two. As you go along building your fuse you're going to build sub assemblies install them then remove them until later. It gets kind of old but it's what you do. Have fun.

Thanks Jim, that's what I plan to do now. Seems more logical this way.
