Fuel tank priming

Post by Spike »

Did anyone prime the backside of the tank baffles or the outside of the end ribs? Im debating on this one.

Boy, I'm glad you brought that up! I didn't do on first tank, but I'm going to on this tank I just finished. There are places where I roughed up the baffle and end ribs on the tank for the proseal stick. I going to hit those spots with some primer.

I primed mine, but then again I primed everything. I also alodined the inside of the tank skins and the internal ribs.

Yup, like Paul said.

I alodined the inards, and primed the outside bits.

I made a mess with the skins and alodine. Tried to brush it on ... like the alodine instructions say you can do ... but it made ugly stains on the skins. Anything I could dip in the alodine worked fine. :)

All -

I did not prime anything on the tanks except the Z-brackets.
.. and when I went to clean the excess pro-seal after I was done with the tanks - some of the primer came off these.

But I've primed EVERYTHING else (inside skins, ribs, stiffners, etc.)

wouldn't the primer dissolve in fuel? doesn't sound like a good thing!

Ian, I think Spike is inquirying about priming the extermnal portions after the tanks are complete.

I did not prime mine and don;t plan on it though I have primed everything else. I figure if I ever need to I can just build a couple more tanks 30 years from now.

I alodined the Z-brackets and the T-405 BHFTABs (big honkin' fuel tank attach brackets) with a Touch-n-Prep pen. The Z-brackets also got primed except for the surfaces that would be Prosealed.
