Seat back rivets

Post by gsimatos »

In assembling the seat backs you have aluminum angle as well as the sheet thatt makes up the back. I believe the rivets are all flush head which would look nice with the heads facing forward but this puts the shop heads on the back side of the assembly against the lighter sheet alumium. Is this legal? So the question is "which way should you orient these rivets to assemble the seat backs?" Thanks Gary

Not really a question of legality. GENERALLY speaking, the shop head should go on the side of the thicker material. BUT, the seatbacks are not a structural component, and appearance and functionality are more important here. The seatback sheet metal is like .040 anyway. It's plenty thick to have a shop head formed on it with little or no distortion.

Chad Thanks for that. I figure keep all the flush head to the front should look neater and smoother too. Man there is a lot of work in those things. Spent all day just making up the parts and still got to do the upper hinge bracket. Thanks again Gary

After reading this post, i just had to go out and look at my seats. I did'nt remember using any flush rivets there. Checked the call out from plans and they are 470. Since they will be hidden by the seats i dont see any reason for going flush. If you want it to look good on the baggage side, you will be dealing with the shop formed head tearing up your seatback upholstery.
