Dimple or Coutersink?

Post by Womack2005 »

How did you guys handle the rear spar holes? Dimple or Countersink?

Specifically, the bottom holes that also have a rib attach flange hole. These are basically impossible to dimple now that the ribs are riveted to the rear spar.

Will, you can dimple two layers at once. You really need to crank on them, but the end product is good.

That is DEFINATELY an oversight in the instructions. There is no mention of this until after you need to do it. There should be something about this BEFORE you rivet the wing ribs onto the spar.

...or you could do them afterwards like I did.

I dimpled both layers at once using the pneumatic sqeezer. Seemed to work fine.

Will:

Seems to me that you could CS this area quite easily. The rib flange would keep your CS bit from wandering very well.

As CJ suggested, dimpling is possible, but if you do, I would spin your deburring tool in the hole a couple revs to flatten out the walls of the dimple a bit, as they would not be as well defined as with a single layer of material. May result in the head of your rivets sitting up a bit proud.

BTW....Gotta get down there to visit some weekend if I can sneak away.

I dimpled mine, then ran the debur tool on it exactly as others have suggested.

You can do two layers like others have said. Works fine. For the rear spar, give it a crank or two with the deburing tool anyway due to the thickness of the spar it does not get as crisp of a dimple.

Any time you can dimple, do that. More metal=more metal.

N782P has 57 hrs on it. So far no problems. Just have to figure out why my Anywheremap WX is not downloading data :bang:

So I just dimpled the rear spar and rib flange together with the Pneumatic SqueezOmatic. Great results
