Wing Skins... Edge Roller?

Post by RV7Factory »

For those that have skinned their wings already, did you use the egde-rolling tool where the skins overlap?

Nope. I won't use it unless I have to. I HATE that tool! And I do have the good one from Cleveland. It's actually MUCH better than the Avery one, but I still can't use it right. The edges turn out looking like crap when I do it. I'm already fearing screwing up the turtle deck...

It's not needed on the wing skins IMHO.

Chad,

Thanks. FWIW, I've had issues with that tool too. I just keep going over the area, back and forth, and the edge gets better and better. YMMV.

FWIW, I didn't roll the edges and I am THRILLED with the results!

I would suggest you do the same!

I'm another one that didn't roll the edges and they look great.

I got one with my Cleaveland kit but haven't used it once and I am on the fuse now. Anyone want to buy it?

Not to go against the flow but... I rolled the edges of my wing skins on my RV-4. It only takes a tiny bit, if you see a crease it's too much. I rolled where the skins butt up against the leading edge skins and tank skins, and where they overlapped on the top of the wing. Only needs to be rolled just enough to keep the edge from curling up when you rivet

FWIW, While at Osh I wandered over to the Cleaveland tool tent/bus and watched one of the sales folk use the edge tool. Since I own one I thought it would be good to have a pro show me how to use it. It's very important not to use to much clamping pressure. You should be able to slip the sheet out from between the wheels with only a little force. That would be between the flat faces of the wheels. Once the tension is set you insert the sheet the rest of the way for edging and edge with one careful but smooth single pull. Once I had it shown to me it was very easy to repeat. The edge treatment is fairly discreet.

I believe that to be the key Jim. If you can really see it its too much.

Well golly, you learn sumthin every day! :) All this time I have been overdoing it. Thank goodness it was only on the leading edges of the rudder and elevators.

I built the wings first so I didn't know any better. If you ever see my wings you'll see some first class over-doing it of the edge roller tool. :)

Going to go a lot easier on the 7.

Less IS TRULY more!

Also, be careful NOT TO OVERWORK one section!

It will stretch the metal and just get worse the more you mess with it!
