Slight...if there is such a thing, skin dent

Post by CalKid »

Swung and missed. Mallet made a slight dent in skin. I can definately live with this but just wondering if there is a procedure to remove slight depressions.

I would gently tap out the dent using a back rivet plate for backing and a flat faced piece such as a bucking bar on the front. Don't go overboard, however, as you don't want to make it worse. I think we've all dropped a bucking bar on a skin at one time or another.

Good Luck!

I've got several such dings in my RV-4 in highly visible areas. The plane flies just fine. :)

Most anything you do, makes it worse.

Putty and paint... makes a mechanic what he ain't!

Don't worry. Be happy!

Use a creative color scheme and you will be alright!

Here lately I've started removing some of the blue plastic film from various parts of the aircraft. There is a lot of "where the hell did that dent come from?" going on. Putty, paint. Putty, paint. Putty, paint. :bang:

I was working on my fuel tank with my A&P buddy, Dan, the other night, and a shop light got dropped into the skin and dented the leading edge both on the top and bottom.

Dan is a WIZARD with sheet metal... he took a light hammer and sharply hit the center of the ding, and it shrunk right back down flat. I was all sorts of :o :o :o
