HELP - Clecoing the tailcone...

Post by Lorin Dueck »

Clecoing the tailcone is tough!!
I've heard it was, but I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.
I've checked that the bulkheads are flat, flanges are properly bent, and the fuse is straight & level.
But I still can't seem to get the holes to line up properly.
The best I've got so far is the 2 aft bulkeheads around the tail cone and up one side of fuse. The other side of the fuse just doesn't want to work.

Any hints or suggestions from those that have done this before?

Thx, Lorin D

i dont recall any problems except that my aft most, bottom piece was splayed out quite a bit and i took it to a bending brake and made the sides go straight up.

i did have to pull a little but nothing extrordinary.

I had a really tough time, and I know Brad's didn't fit worth a darn. He ordered a new one, and it fit much better.

I didn't think of doing that, but instead just opened up each of the holes to a #30 rivet, and it all worked out fine.

It's a poorly designed area if you ask me...

Thanks guys...

Think I'll look at it fresh after church this afternoon and decide what to do.
Hadn't thought of drilling out to a #30 - that's a good option (so long as I maintain adequate edge distance).

You won't have any problems with edge distance...the difference between a 40 and 30 hole in that area isn't a problem...here's mine-

Order a new one. I'm serious. #1 gave me all kinds of problems and I ended up cracking two holes. #2 slid in like butter!

I think Van's improved the bends on this part. You can see the differences between them in the top picture here. And this was after I improved the bend of the old one (bottom).

I'm guilty, too, for having to have ordered a new one. First was a pain, then I noticed figure of 8 drilled holes as I went aft. Second piece was much easier.
