Tip up canopy question

Post by gsimatos »

On the tip-up canopy forward skin we have those little "dog ears" that stick out and are supposed to lay smoothly on the outside of the canopy. i thinks many builders just cut them away but if you wanted to glue them to the canopy what kind of adhesive would work?? Thanks Gary

Yes, cut them off. I wish I had been more aggressive in hacking them off because that area, when you make your fiberglass fairing, is a real pain in the neck when you transition around the corner and onto the side skirts. If you don't cut the dog ears off, you'll get a little "ski jump" there.

One note for your plans. You see the most forward hole in the canopy/side skirts attachment? Don't drill it.

Bob, Thanks for that. What is the issue with the most forward hole in the canopy??

It's the point at which the canopy bottom edge begins in earnest to curve inward around the front of the airplane and the forward-most hole hardware exerts a significant amount of stress in that location,'

When people tell me, "I have a crack in my canopy," I always say, "the forward most hole?" and they almost always say, "yes."

I talked to a guy the other day who has a 9 inch crack in his canopy. Man, that sure can ruin a guy's day.

OK I heard ya. I agree that curve is a concern for me also so I will figure an alternative way to go. Thanks again Gary
