Dremel Tool

Post by RAgbunag »

Gentlemen,

I've purchased a Dremel tool on the advice of other builders, but I must say I'm mildly disappointed in its utility. Mainly, I was planning on using it for edge deburring, but the truth is I find my die grinder (equipped with a sanding barrel and scotchbrite wheels) produces far superior results.

Aside from being able to debur without the use of an air compressor, is there any other advantage I'm missing in this tool? To those out there who have one, what are your favorite attachments to the Dremel?

As always, thanks guys.

I don't use it for deburring at all...
I use the cutoff wheels a lot and several little carbide bits for cutting various things.

I also like it for cutting drywall (special attachment) and I have a cordless one for the dog's nails...

I'm sure CJ will speak up here as he loves his!

Ohhhh yahhhh... It is the greatest thing for airplane building since the pneu squeeze.

I never use it for edge deburring. The scotchbrite pads wear out very quickly for that purpose and it is more efficient to edge debur in other fashions. The scotchbrite "puff" isn't pictured here, but it fits onto the 402 mandrel. It is really handy for small finishing jobs.

The abrasive wheel (426) that Thomas spoke of also fits this mandrel. I too use it all the time. It is easier to use than a hacksaw when fiddling with small parts. Get some of those.

The side cutting burs (193, 194, 196 & 115 as well as the funky shaped ones) are indispensable for opening up already cut holes, slots and apetures and shaping solids.

Drum sanders (407, 408 & 432) debur and trim.

An assortment of Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Carbide stones are GREAT for deburring steel weldments and trimming steel stuff. You don't want to use a hole deburring tool on steel. It will dull VERY quickly! Use this instead.

A 198 & 199 will do some aggressive aluminum cutting. It is redundant to the 426 wheels but is still fun to use. It is like a thin side cutting bur.

How is that for a start, Rudy?

i also love mine and i've used it for lots of things. it works great for trimming fiberglass, drilling, the cutoff wheels are great, and trimming my doggies nails! i haven't tried it for deburring yet, but i was planning on trying it for the wing rib deburring.

Chad, the wing rib deburring goes MUCH faster with the 6" wheel on the grinder.

ALSO, I know that this makes good sense and you probably already knew it but I am gonna say it anyways... debur BEFORE fluting them!

OH! I almost forgot!

The #500 is a 3M Cut & Polish wheel!

Great to have too!

Forget about the 150 on the left. This is the only .gif I could find.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I was on my way to Home Depot to return this gadget; instead, I think I'll trim my dog's nails:)

Thanks for including the illustrations, Captain; they really helped.

roger that CJ! that's my plan for the edges...what about the lightening holes? :? that's where i was gonna run the 1" wheel around in the dremel.

i did learn the deburr before fluting thing the hard way when doing the ribs for the tail. :bang: good piece of advise for everyone though!!

Just bought one a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be the only way i could remove a couple "o" four rivets. I'd keep it around.

Chad, the 2" wheel chucked into the drill press was how I did the lightening holes. I would do it that way again (and probably will)!

Give that a try!

Seems to me those wheels like speed.

Gentlemen,

The lowly swivel deburr tool will deburr a lightening hole, well, like lightening.
