TEACH a man to weld and he is welded for a LIFETIME... or something like that!
Yesterday, Thermos came down to my shop and brought with him all that was needed to fab up the infamous "Rudi Geryling Wing Jig Stands".
Cover me, I am going in!
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzt, zzzzzzztttt, sizzle, POP! (sound of eggs cooking)
VICTORY BEER!
Thermos did all the prep and welding himself and can't wait to weld something else together!

Captain John is a great teacher...I had a blast learning how to do MIG welding (what's the right term, John?). Those victory beers were especially tasty!
Now if I could just get the rest of my shop rebuilt and start sealing some tanks...
Chad, I was thinking of a nice shade of pink, with some purple polka dots.

Thanks Dave!
Technically, the term for MIG (Metal Inert Gas) has recently been changed to GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). Why? I dunno...
I just LOVE sparks! It was a pleasure having you down!
I am laying out the firewall now. Need to prep the boat trailer for the trip to Maine this Saturday. It is easier to do wheel bearings in the garage, than on I95!
The floatplanes are a-callin'!

Themos, CJ, I am about to fab those too
I asked Chad, and he said 1/8" thickness for everything. Is that what you guys used? Also, what size tube steel and how long did you go with?
Thanks

Will,
Yes indeed, all the material is 1/8" thickness. The uprights are 2"x4" structural tube, 54" long - the feet are 2"x3" angle, 10" long. You might be able to use thinner material, but the 1/8" stuff is pretty sturdy. Those jigs should last through several sets of wings!

Thanks Thermos! I see that you used Rudy's demensions with the max height.
Thanks again!

I did? That was purely by accident...great minds and all that. I just built them to the same height as the temporary wooden jigs I had in my previous shop.

it was changed with the advent of FCMAW (Flux Core Metal Arc Welding)

I like the "the weldor welds with a welder" quote! Pretty clever!
Tell me now, how is the FCMAW process different?
Does that have a shielding gas like GMAW and the flux of an arc, but in the core instead to preserve it's purity?
...just a guess?

good guess
FCMAW can be done with or without shielding gas depending on the wire used
two types are innershield and outershield but the flux is in the center of the wire in both, done with shielding gas it gives very deep penetrating welds
