OK, maybe this is a newbie question, but...
What I'm wondering is, when I set the reg to 90psi on the compressor then run the drill, the pressure drops quickly then settles on about 80psi or so while its running.
Is this a cheap regulator, and should I run the compressor at full power and buy another in line reg, or is this what they're supposed to do?

Dont sweat that a bit. Its just because of the way our regulators are built (read not expensive). If I really want X psi then I pull the trigger and set it to X while its flowing air. Really though its not typically something to worry about as long as you are in the ballpark.

Agreed, the numer on the dial is merely consequential and insignificant. It is how the tool performs and consistency of that performance... where the rubber meets the road.
I have regulators attached to hoses that are then attached to specific tools. This eliminates the need to redial pressures on every use and allows me to maintain 85 psi in all my lines.
This is a tad more costly, but I like the simplicity of it.
