Scotchbrite, etc.

Post by tshort »

I found a great source for Scotchbrite / 3M products with local outlets - try Grainger (www.grainger.com). I got a 6" gray deburring wheel for 24$ - compare with 50 or so from most specialty stores. Also picked up some other scotchbrite pads / grinding wheels / etc.

I have found that a lot of the specialty shops (not naming any names), while they have some great "unique" tools, are very expensive on some of the other stuff.

I bought most of my tools from The Yard, and got prices that were 50% or more cheaper than other places, for the same stuff. I have been very happy with their customer service, and their standard ground shipping gets here in 2 days.

I still need to find a good source for those 2" cylindrical scotchbrite wheels that go on a die grinder...

Another greatsource is McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/
Do a search on "nonwoven abrasives" or "nylon mesh abrasives" or even just "scotchbrite". The only problem is that their catalog is so huge, you can blow a lot of time just window shopping. Lots of tools, hardware, you name it, and they ship really fast.

Your local auto body repair supplies shop has them. I pay $0.89 each!

Walk in asking professional AB type questions, lead into that you work on airplanes and he will give you the "special" price if you did it all right!

Hey CJ,

If your not a shop teacher, maybe you should try to transfer. I think it would be cool to see a high school shop class build a RV.

Hahaha, I teach Electrical and the kids are VERY interested in the project. They are always asking about my progress and when it will be completed!

This summer I am going to offer Young Eagle flights to them thanks to the kind folks at Marstons Mills Airport, a cool little grass strip here on Cape Cod. The Marstons Mills EAA Chapter slows down in the winter, but I will join their organization in the spring. Maybe my EAA 62 Chapter in Plymouth will do a similar thing this summer? I hope so.

My Superintendent probably wouldn't want me making curriculum and lesson plans around aviation... but I COULD help the science teacher with his Bernoulli's theory lessons!

Need to get kids interested in this sport! It IS the future!

Scotch-Brite Wheels for Grinder

Post by bmurrish »

I have been doing a little web surfing looking for places that sell 3M scotch-brite wheels and have seen different types. What is the best type to mount on a bench grinder?

The one I got at grainger is a gray wheel, 6", part #4ZR87. It works great for deburring, but is only ~3/8" thick.
I just got (today) a 1" wheel from McMaster Carr - will let you know how it works.
FYI - a lot of the stuff I ordered from McMaster I thought was 3M scotchbrite, but has turned out to be some other type, "Made in Mexico." We'll see how it works.

Yes, let us know how that Mexi-wheel works! McMaster is kind of a JC Whitney of building materials. You never know what you are gonna get!

Sounds like a Gump-ism!

Just got my tool kit I ordered from Cleaveland and low and behold, there is a brand new 6"x1 1/2" scotch-brite wheel included in the package. I totally forgot that it came with the kit. Glad I didn't buy one elsewhere. Time to start hunting for a place to buy 2" RELOCs and a die grinder.

John, I noticed the 2" RELOC kit at Sears with the Crastman name slapped all over it. Do you have this kit? Will the 3M brand discs work on it? I just don't want to be locked into buying them from Sears.

Sorry I missed this post...

Yes, they will work. Buy them and try returning them when they wear out! May as well test the Sears return policy!

I am sure they won't do it. Good entertainment for a night anyways!

Which 3M ?

Post by rowd »

17 previous posts on this subject still leaves me a little confused about which 6 inch wheel I should be using on the bench grinder.
3M produce a multitude of products with varying degrees of coarseness...
I would appreciate advice on which particular wheel (or wheels) is best suited for RV requirements. Anyone ?

Rowd, the one you want for your 6" bench grinder is the "Cut and Polish" one with the 1/2" arbor.

This is what it looks like:

This is the link from Cleaveland Tool:

It sells for $57.

Hope this helps!

U R Welcome!

Get some of the smaller ones that mount on your 1/4" die grinder too.

What I do is chuck 'em in the drill press and they are great for lightening holes and short, straight edges.

They are also only 7 bucks to replace!!!
