Another source for these:
The guys at the Yard (yardstore.com) will ship a piece of scrap 1/4" steel to you for a weight based price - it works out to something like $2.50 for a 6 x 18" sheet of steel. Run over it with a scotchbite pad on the die grinder and you're good to go.
I know it's not 3/8" like the prepared plates, but it seems like it should be adequate - and lots better than 30$.

Most local steel yards will let you in and pick their scrap pile as well.
If you have one in your course of travels, stop in and say hello. I am sure they are nice guys. Ask to poke around the trash and get a good sized hunk and some homemade BUCKING BARS for next to nothing.
I have a couple homemade bucking bars and tend to really like them.
