Rivet Cutter

Post by bmurrish »

The tool kit I bought from Cleaveland doesn't come with a rivet cutter. How important is this tool? Can I get away with a cheap $12 one from Spruce or should I step up to the heavy duty cutter for around $40.

My friend who's building a -10 bought the spruce version - I'm gonna borrow that if the need arises. I think it should be fine.

Did you get your kit yet??

Hopefully it is something you don't need to use that often. I still didn't get my empennage, but I got a notice from Fedex stating that it is schedule for pick-up at Van's today Feb 14th. I wonder why it is just getting shipped out today. Oh well, I did get a chance to get some things done around the shop (more lighting, more shelf space, c-frame table built, etc).

That's good - my kit came before I had the shop all the way in order, and I had to force myself to take breaks from the kit just to finish shop stuff ... still don't have shelves up.

I don't think we need the cutter much...

I have one, but more times than not I find myself just touching the rivet to the disc sander. It is just easier.

Are you talking about hitting it with a ROLOC on an angle grinder?

Neither, I just hold the rivet in my needlenose pliers and touch it to my 150 grit disc sander.

Zzzzzttttttttttt... zzzzzzzzzzztttttttttt

...and it is done.

That is a "Wicked Stick" trick!

Don't you mean the cut and polish wheel by 3M?

Yeah, it is also called a Cut & Polish wheel, but I've never used it to "Cut" with so I guess that's why I refer to is as a 3M Scotch-brite deburring wheel.

Note, they have 2 grades as well. A 7A medium, and a 7S fine.
