Wing jig details

Post by captain_john »

I posted this here as a request from greylingr who is a member in another forum. I thought people here would appreciate it also!
Wow 3 'yes' and 0 'no',
Thanks guys...Any other nice wing jig tips and photos appreciated.

Captain_John:
Interesting looking support you got in the middle of your wings, what is that? and do you have a closer picture?

How did you attach your uprights to your 'epoxy' painted floor, since I need to do the same on my 'epoxy' floor?

How do you guys support the tops of the uprights?

Thanks
My reply:

OK, First things first...

The thing in the middle is a double stacked 2x6 with a piece of angle on it called B-Line. I am an Electrician (actually now I teach Electricity) and that brand of angle is prevalent in my trade. You can use any angle you have available.

Image

The next thing is how it attaches to the ceiling:

Image

Here, I slammed another hunk of angle against the ceiling and the other side connects to my loft:

Image

The bottoms are plastic anchored to the concrete and barring an unforseen earthquake, it should be ok.

Image

Here is a shot of the back side ot the jig, where the spars rest on the angle:

How is that for pictures!?!

...also, this blew my mind for a moment:

Image

The spar is made of thicker material on the top than that of the bottom. Actually it is trimmed more on the bottom, but the levels show the difference when leveling it to then skin 'em.

Image

Trippy, huh?

Image

Watch that one when you do your setup.

Well, back to drilling DUBBLERS!!!

Hey CJ. how far did you space the wings apart? Do you find there is enough room to move between them?

OK, 4' will give me plenty of room to work around the outside as well. Also, when you get a chance can you post a pic of how you mounted the outboard end of the spar to your jig?

Did you drill holes in the rib?

Negatory...

I used the provided tooling holes.

I match drilled them to the angle and through bolted them with #8 machine screws.

I put washers underneath all the nuts to keep them from scoring the ribs.

Feel free to ask away! I am glad to help out!

I am glad I asked, because by reading the plans it tells you to "drill and bolt a temporary 5" long piece of aluminum angle to the outboard rib with 3/16" bolts. The additional holes in the ribs will not compromise strength". I figured I wasn't drilling nothing until I seen what you were doing. Thanks for the pic.

I just didn't see any reason to drill additional holes in the rib. The tooling holes look like they would accomodate a #10 screw, but I had #8's and that is what went in!

I think it is one of those things where you can do it one of many ways. This is just the way this guy (me) did it.

I ain't saying I am right.

CJ,

Are your outboard rear spars floating or are they secured to the posts? Can't tell by the pictures.

I secured them with a piece of angle which is attached to the vertical jig post.

I screwed the Alum. Angle to the post, aligned everything one last time, match drilled the rear spar to the angle and clecoed it together.

Need a pic?

I can snap one, if you like.

One more question CJ. How high did you mount the forward spar off the ground. Sorry for all the questions.

No problem, Bill.

I put them 48" off the finished floor. That is kinda high. My reasons...

I have a bad back and would rather get a steppie than bend over.
I have lots of headroom available and may as well use it.
I have a little dog that bumps into stuff. I didn't want him whacking the lower spar all the time.

Wicked Stick had his mounted much lower due to headroom considerations.

It is an arbitrary decision. It really doesn't matter from an "end product" point of view.

The biggest consideration is working height.

Hope this helps!

CJ,

how much clearance did hangin' 'em at 48" give you on the bottom? i'd like to make my posts 48", and hang the wings at 40-42", but i was concerned about clearance down below.

Chad, mine are at 44" and I have plenty of room off the floor. 48" will probably be easier on your back though.
