Backrivet Table

Post by cjensen »

Tonight, while I was supposed to be finishing painting the bedroom while my wife was gone to her Canine Good Citizen class with Wiley, I decided to put that off, and make the drop in for the backrivet plate to finish that table.

Turned out pretty good, here's a couple of pics.

So far, she hasn't said anything about the bedroom NOT being done! May have skated by on this one!

Better watch it there or you'll be sharing a room with Ron.

Nice table, Chad! It WILL come in handy!!!

My wife thinks that you need to take a better picture of Wiley than the one which is on your homepage!

Well, I put a few more on HIS page, not the home page.

Thanks for the comments on my table! I can't wait to use it!

My tail kit is gathering dust as I acquire airplane building tools, but I'm getting close. I'm wondering about this back riveting plate. How often is it used, and how large ought it to be? The ones I've seen for sale in the $30 range are fairly small. Would it be helpful to have a larger plate? I've got a 24" x 36" granite surface plate, and I was thinking about buying a sheet of steel to cover that. Is that overkill? Also, what kind of steel do I need? Stainless? Tool steel?

I actually like the inlaid idea, too, so maybe I'll go with that. Would I have to worry about adequate support under the plate to prevent any deformation?

Anything related to back riveting plates ideas or experiences welcome...

p-wich,

i haven't used my back rivet plate on my tail kit yet, but i did use it on the training kits that i did. i comes in really handy, and makes the stiffeners a no brainer. it will also be used to do the trailing edge of the rudder. i went down to the local welding shop and bought a 16x5 piece of cold finish steel, then used the die grinder to take that cold finish off with a really fine piece of sand paper. it shines up really nice, and i put a coat of wax on it to keep it from rusting (it still will rust after time, but it slows it way down).

as far as support underneath, that table top that you see in the picture is actually two boards thick, using 3/4 inch plywood. the laid in plate only takes up about a 1/4 inch, but i thought it best to go with a second layer. the plate itself needs no support, as the rivets are no match for it, not even for the gun.

IT"S REALLY LOUD!! use ear protection!!!!!!! it's a must.

hope this helps.
