i'm wondering what you guys are doing (if anything) to protect the countersinks cut in to the wing spar? i've seen a few are priming with self-etching primer, some are alodining just the holes with the pen and no primer over it, some are doing nothing.

seems like there's always a question that needs attention...

I hadn't planned on doing anything personally.

I shot them with my detail gun before I skun the wings.

I also shot any scratches and holidays on the ribs while I had the gun out.

I am currently up in Maine brushing up on my accent as I type this!

you're soundin' like my grandfather now! they lived in NH and my dad was born in brookline. he doesn't have the accent, since they moved to south florida when he was 2 and he grew up there, but my grandparents are strong new englanders.

well, here's what i ended up doing...mask and SE primer.





turned out really nice!

Looks really uniform!

You will need to reprime when you countersink the rest of them for the skin dimples.

yep, i know. to do that, i'll just use something a couple of feet long to "block" the part i don't want primed since those holes are on the outer edge of the flange where the reinforement bars are. probably a piece of AL that i'll just hold in place so i don't have to mask it off again. farther down the spar will get a quick masking...masking the reinforment bars was a real PITA for me for some reason. don't want to do that again!

on a side note, as a result of my masking, i must have used an older roll of electricians tape, and i have black adhesive stuck to my spar in a few areas. it had to be old because my other roll that ran out never left a hint of adhesive. any suggestions to get that off of there?

I had a couple of spots where mine did that too - Goo Gone took it off without too much trouble.

One masking suggestion - can't tell if you did it or not: First mask the line with tape alone and cover the critical area; then go back and tape the paper towel or paper or whatever big stuff you're using on top of that with another piece of tape. That way you don't have to futz around with the paper and the tape and try to get everything lined up - you have a big target from the first strip of tape you laid down.
