Advice wanted on coating completed sub-assemblies

Post by pgpeal »

Any advice on what to do with exterior surfaces of sub-assemblies (such as the empennage) when finished and going into storage while we build the rest?

Presumably we remove the blue skin - then do we prime, bubblewrap and store or just bubblewrap and store?

Thanks
Patrick

I would just bubblewrap and store ina very very safe place. It's best to prime right before you paint the exterior since the exterior paint type may dictate the primer you want. Also, if you're storing the empennage inside you don't need to worry about corrosion. (assuming you don't live in a cave ;).

I have a good friend that is building a 6. He primered the whole tail, inside and out. I dont remember what he used but it ended up being one of those tough as nails green primers. If you ask me thats too much work. I think Ive settled on just shooting where the parts have been scuffed up and where parts join. Ill let the alclad do its thing for everywhere else. Wrapping the pieces with bubble wrap or some such is a good idea though.

Spike, that is what I did on mine. Used rattle cans of Martin Senor 7220 self etching primer from Napa auto. Other builders I know have done the same, usally with the same good results.
