Other kits

Post by captain_john »

I think everyone here would either build a -10 or a -3 as their next project, but other than Vans kits, what would you build? What other kits do you like?

I would likely do another metal kit, but the plastic ones are REALLY SEXY!

The Nemesis NXT always looked HOT and I really like it's lines.

A Hughes H1 all in metal is really cool, but there are no kits and I am not that smart, nor do I have that much MONEY!

I will probaly make a high wing floatplane next, I think. Who knows!?!

What interests you?

I think I might like to build an RV-10 down the road, but it would have to be done with 1 or 2 other partners and then fly it as a co-ownership deal.

Other than that, perhaps maybe a cub for those lazy summer evenings just before the sun goes down and I can be a tree top flyer, low and slow ;)

Niether a 10 nor a 3 for me! If I built another RV, it would be a 12 if I could still keep the 7, or an 8 if not.

Other kits that interest me are the Rans S-7 (reality)

The Nemesis def. looks hot, until I see the 90mph stall speed :o

Two of the planes I really like don't have kits manufactured anymore- the Berkut:

And the Thunder Mustang- this one was local to me before we moved:

But a 4 place would be nice, and since they are just up the road, I think a Lancair IV-P would do just fine :)

Oh, and the Sportsman 2+2 would be a good, utilitarian choice :)

Ive flown a Velocity XLRG. What a friggin monster. Did a high speed fly by down the runway in it and damn those things go. It was on the short list but I dont have the resources (read money or space) to build one.

If I build another one I would love a Pitts Model 12. Im in love with tube and fabric, especially if it has 2 wings and a round engine. Might do something stately like a Hatz. Actually there is a new bipe that is just getting ready to be released that is based on the new radial that came out. That would really get me going.

An RV10 is nice, but there are a bunch of certifieds that are in that same arena I wouldn't have to build.

Too many planes, not enough money. *sigh*

Since I already have a cross-country plane in my 7A, I would go the other direction and build a WWI replica biplane. The ones from aerodrome airplanes are the ones I am looking at, the Fokker D-VII in particuliar. Something interesting about low/slow, wind in your hair, bugs in you teeth flying.

This is the Sportsman 2+2.

It is a much more realistic second plane than the Nemesis.

Warbird restoration.

I do not fly, nor have much interest in learning either.

Kit planes, I dont have much interest building any kit planes because of the financial aspects, but I do enjoy reading everyone's posts with their planning, progress, destruction of parts etc.

I have extensive sheetmetal repair and modification on older naval aircraft, and I think it may carry over for use on some type of warbird restoration project.

Any ideas how to get involved in something like that?

OK laugh all you want but THIS will proabably be my next kit if I ever sell the RV-7 (assuming I finish it and fly it) I saw a CH-701 flying off the ultralight strip at OSH a few years ago and it was leaving the ultralights behind. It's got a face that only it's builder could love but the performance was incredible.

Scott, I suppose if you really want that type of performance, then go for it.

Thing is, I almost feel sorry for that airplane, since it's so homely! Function over form must have been the battle cry when it was designed! :P

As for my next project, I like the idea of low and slow as well. Anyone see the latest EAA magazine with the Neuport 28 in it?? Rotec radial engine. REALLY neat. That was the first stick and tissue model airplane I ever built. Would be fitting for me to build one.

There is one of those Zenith's here. I have looked closely at the quality of the components.

After assembling the RV, the fit and finish (or lack thereof) would be unacceptable to most.

Scott, have you examined it in detail? It works, but it is crude. REALLY crude!

Post by aparchment »

Too many planes, too little time, money, life . . .

I definitely want to build a -10 next, but if money were no object I would build a Lancair IVP. I would also like to build something that has unlimited aerobatic capability. That Sportsman looks awesome too John. There are a million lakes to land on around here.

The Rans s7 had my eye last year, but after dealing with their personel at SNF I don't think I could ever give them my money.

After the Bearhawk is done I'd really like something small for my next build. I'd still like side by side seating, High wing, LSA I suppose. Fabric wings and open cockpit. Something I could just bop around in on a lazy Summer's day.

Well that's not so bad. I wouldn't feel so bad about abusing it. :)

I just want something I can land in my buddy's cow pasture and out in the boonies. Another possiblity would be an amphib like the SeaRey.

This one looked kind of cool. I think I even have enough plywood laying around to build it
