Artificial Horizon

Post by TomC »

Hi All,

I am getting close to adding an artificial horizon to my flying 7A. Currently, I have a round airspeed, altitude, turn&bank, and VSI. They are arranged as a conventional six-pack with the center two "holes" open. A Dynon D10A or a Trutrak ADI would fit into the top center of the six-pack. I am aiming to have an IFR panel when completed. Either the Dynon or the ADI would be fitted with battery backup to provide for an electrical failure. I have looked at a larger EFIS but this would require a complete panel renovation which I do not want (I'm having too much fun flying :) ). Has anyone used/seen the D10A with the SL-30 VOR/LOC/GS display? This would eliminate the need for a separate CDI that I think would required with the ADI. I also have a space reserved for a separate CDI if required.

Your opinions would be valued and appreciated.

I don't have a Dynon nor do I fly IFR but a lot of guys who do have Dynons and do fly IFR really like them. Dynon is a real stand up company with good customer support. I am planning on a Dynon EFIS for my panel. Just my opinion FWIW.

I have just finished installing the Dynon D10A in my RV-6A. It has Course indicator and it is a simple one button push to get to it. My plane is not flying and neither my plane or I are Instrument rated. We just updated the Dynon D10A data base to version 2.19 which is easy as long as you can borrow a laptop. My friend who helped me wire my panel has a lap top which we used. I also have used it to program check lists and the radio section etc.

Thanks for your responses. Will the D10A fit without cutting a hole in the sub-panel behind the main panel? I have a slider 7A.

I installed my Dynon as a flush mount in my RV-6A slider and therefore I had to cut a hole in the subpanel in order to hook up the plumbing. A more patient person might be able to do it with out cutting the hole. If you put it in a 31/8" hole you will have more room. I know there is some difference in the cockpit between a RV-6 and RV-7. I would measure the distance between your subpanel in the slider 7 versus the difference in the subpanel of a slider 6. My Dynon D10A has HSI and you can use a bug with it. Good luck. It does not have a radio tracking.
