Building updates!?!
John, the floor looks kind of shiny, I would never have guessedit was the tile. Looks very nice. I looked at it for my shop and got sticker shock so am working on the concrete. Someday when I build that dream home with attached hangar I think I'll epoxy the whole hangar.
Okay, now I better get back to reality.

Keep the Plastic on !!
Keep the plastic on as long as possible. It protects the skin from builder's rash! You never know how soon you will be ready to fly or paint it. I took some off several years ago and I wish it were still on! I hope to fly it soon but it is a year or more from painting>

That looks great, I wish I was that far along at this point in the year, cause I really wanted to have the canopy cutting and fitting stage ready by no later than August. Unfortunetly, I'm about 2 or 3 months behind.
I just finished riveting the aft top skin and need to do some wiring and panel work before doing the front baggage door. I have all the tail wiring done, and figure I should hang the wings and set the incidence next.
Any gotcha's on the front baggage door, or pointers to help make it a good fit ?

Dave,
The baggage door was another of those tasks that really wasn't as bad as some make it seem. After talking to several people and seeing a couple of different 8's, I came up with a sequence which is just slightly different than Van's reccomended technique.
The outside of the door is nothing special. I do suggest that you pre-bend the outer skin to approximate the shape of the fuselage before assembling the framing pieces. Once hinged to the fuselage, I drilled the inner holes from inside as shown in the builder's manual, although I found a 12" drill more effective than the 6", and I used an angle drill on a couple of holes.
Next is where I deviated from the instructions. I prosealed the inner skin to the door, and immediately set the rivets on the ends of the skin and one of the inner corners - these are the only ones you cannot get to from the inside. Then I hinged the door and taped it really well, then climbed in and set the rest of the rivets before the proseal cured.
After the proseal cured, the door is very stiff. It fits reasonably well, and it only took two days to complete the basic structure.

moving along...
It's been awhile since I've posted... I'm spending my free time in the garage instead of on the PC! My lovely wife & I finished riveting the top skins, and I got the aileron / flap brackets and gap seals done:

Now I'm about halfway through ailerons... catching up to you Smitty!

Way to go Dave!
I haven't been able to work for a few weeks now. I've have tennis elbow and the doctor said the only way to get over it is to not use your arm. Ever tried to make coffee with your left arm? My wife thinks it's funny. Damn old age!!
I think I'll be back in the saddle by the time Oshkosh is over.
See yous guys at the BBQ!
