Way to go Chad. Every dollar counts towards that Subaru engine... Wait a minute, what month is this?

My finish kit is in town and ready for delivery/pick up. Looks like shipping cost from Oregon to Baltimore was $520 and I am pretty sure it went air freight. I can't say that I am too upset by that.

Hey John,
Vans used BAX for the shipping. I am pretty sure it went air freight to BWI and then was trucked to Hagerstown where I picked it up. It was in pristine condition when I got it.

Wow, air freight sounds expensive, is that typical how it gets across the country?Spike wrote:... I am pretty sure it went air freight to BWI ...
Ever since I saw my wing crates arrive in ABF's subcontractor's truck upside down and sideways, I've been wondering if there's a better way to get my fuselage to Baltimore. Maybe I'll try picking it up myself from the terminal with my pickup truck.

another data point
My fuse kit came last month via FedEx ground. Got a bill later from Vans for $188 for the shipping. I was expecting to pay the driver, since I had to do that for the wing kit. Not sure why they deferred billing this time.

I don't think so. I was surprised to see that myself. They shipped on a Wed and like 3 days later it was on the east coast. It was tracked leaving a major airport in NJ and marked as at BWI 3 hours later. Seems to me that it was likely shipped by air. The box also had BWI stickers all over it.johnk wrote: Wow, air freight sounds expensive, is that typical how it gets across the country?
Either way it looked like it had been treated with great care. I was a bit surprised to be honest.

I just received my RV-10 finish kit. It cost $460 to deliver to the Columbus, OH area. It was also shipped by BAX, which is now DB Schenker.
I had a mixed experience, but the crate arrived in perfect condition. The fee included lift gate service to the house. The local terminal coordinator stated that the crate wouldn't fit on their lift gate and that I should have plenty of help to get it off the truck.
I was given a Thursday delivery date, which was about a week after it left the factory. The problem was that their web site showed the crate sitting in LA. I was told on multiple occassions not to worry, that the computers are always wrong. I was prepared to take a half day off work to meet the driver.
A few mnutes before leaving work that day, I get a call that the crate isn't in Columbus and they don't know where it is located at the moment. They start the formal seach process and found the crate in LA, just like the web site stated. There was now an exception notice on the web and a 800 number to call for more details. This is when I found out the shipment was sent on a "defferred" status. What this means to Bax is that the crate can be bumped for whatever reason. My crate made it to LA, but it appeared that nobody was going to reschedule it out until they ran the exception scan search. I was also told that it was an unusually large crate for them. My thought at the time was a little surpise, since they new the dimensions and set the fees when they accepted the shipment. So I was a little miffed when the size cause them to deferred the shipment for a week.
It arrived to Columbus the following week. I got the call that they would be at the house between 12:30 and 1:00. I left work and made it to the house by noon. They arrived at 5:30. However, the driver had a portable lift truck with him. He lifted the crate, rolled it on the lift gate, and rolled it up the drive way to the garage all by himself. All my help that BAX asked to have on hand just watched.
The crate arrived with no damage. The lift service was fantastic. The price was better than the alternatives. I wasn't informed by Vans that the shipment was being sent with the "defferred" option to lower the bill. I would have been fine with this, I was just disappointed that that Vans didn't make me aware in advance. It retrospect, it wasn't a fault of BAX, but more of correct expectation setting from Vans.
All in all, everything worked out ok and I'm now happily working on my doors.

It seems like shipping can just be a crap shoot with respect to service. Though in the end it sounds like most of us actually do get the kits in good condition.
