Conduit possibility of chafing?

Post by 704CH »

Hey guys, I am finishing the bottom skin on my slow build wings and had a question regarding location of conduit compared to the screws that hold the access panels in place. The conduit lies right over the rear nutplates and the screws stick through about 1/4 inch. My question is does this allow for possilbe future chafing of the conduit?

The location of the conduit is per Van's specifications..

Thanks, see photo

Hey Chad...that absolutely will chafe, but I really wouldn't worry too much about it. If it really bothers you, wrap it in UHMW tape right there. LOTS of airplanes flying with conduit in that same spot.

You could also use a shorter screw, or cut that one off to make it shorter to keep it from contacting the conduit.

What chad said.

Personally I would do something about it because either I wouldn't sleep or I would totally forget about it until the smoke had been let out.

That would bother me too. Stick a nylon zip-tie mounting base (first item on: http://steinair.com/cableties.htm ) pad to the bottom skin and run a zip-tie around the conduit to pull it away from the screw.

How about putting down a dab of proseal to keep the conduit away from the screws?

Thanks guys. I am really surprised that Vans recommends this location for the conduit run.. Oh well, it's easy to do something about.

Thx

I ran mine on top...but that was an accident! Worked out just fine until it was time to run wires from the wings to the fuselage. Had to make a couple of turns to get the wires in...sucked... :bang:
